I RECENTLY INSTALLED A GM BUG DEFLECTOR ON MY '02 AVALANCHE-
THE PROBLEM IS I AM GETTING AN OUTRAGEOUS AMOUNT OF NOISE-IT SOUND SLIKE IT IS RAINING WHEN I AM RUNNING ABOVE 50 MPH-I BELEIVE I INSTALLED IT CORRECTLY-NOT TO HARD TO INSTALL-BUT DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO GET RID OF THE NOISE.

THANKS

Its the weather stripping running down each side of the windshield. Get some 3m double sided foam acrylic tape and tape them bad boys to the glass.

JW

THANKS EVERYONE- I APPRECIATE THE HELP-I WILL DO THE PROCEDURE THIS WEEKEND AND LET YOU KNOW HOW IT GOES-THANKS AGAIN

AND YES THIS SITE DOES ROCK

ya'll sure about this? It took me a while to figure it out(or thought that I figured it out) and it was after a windsheild replacement that it started, I thought the guy got some glass fragments in my a/c duct work. Cab the weatherstripping really be the problem? say it aint so!

Its so, Especially after a replacement. Was yours Shield mounted at the dealership, they probably put the tape on the original windshield. That is why it didn't appear till the new windshield went on.

JW

No question about it.....its definitely the windshield trim. I couldn't believe that the noise was coming from there either, but I quickly became a believer after performing the extra tape upgrade.

BEYOND THE SHADOW OF A DOUBT........FIXXED.! YES, THE DEALER INSTALLED THE BUG SHEILD, WHO WOULD HAVE THUNK IT. I GOT RID OF THE OLD BUG SHEILD AND BOUGHT A NEW ONE. GET THIS, THE NEW ONE COMES WITH TWO LONG PIECES OF DOUBLE STICK TAPE, NOT TO MENTION INSTRUCTIONS FOR INSTALLATION WHICH PREVENTS "WIND CHATTER"(THAT'S WHAT THEY CALL IT) ON THE GLASS. THANKS GUYS, IF YA'LL EVER IN THE NEW ORLEANS AREA LOOK ME UP, THE DRINKS ARE ON ME!

That's a very dangerous statement with this group. ;)

"And in other news, motorists are reporting a sudden en masse migration of Chevy trucks toward Louisiana. One witness described the account as "odd yet inspiring" after seeing 11,513 Chevy Avalanche trucks headed toward New Orleans, while chanting in pefect unison "FREE BEER- FREE BEER- FREE BEER- FREE BEER"

"Details tonight at six-o'clock. Shelly McSweatycraken reporting for News Channel 9. "

Dude, you should seek professional help!.......................and I was referring to the "few" that helped me on this thread.............you get out much?

Got a new gm bugdeflector for Fathers day and installed it according to the instructions but had a lot of trim noise. Finally got around to doing the tape fix I found on this site. WOW!!! What a difference. Now I remember how quiet the ride on my av was before the deflector. I cant say enough about this site. Everytime I have a question or problem I can count on the rest of you guys. Thank you so much.

first i want to thank everyone for their input-i found a lot of great information-i thought i would pass this idea on as well-pertaining to the deflector noise-i work for a car dealership and asked our leak specialist about the noise-he told me he fixes the noise on all the gm trucks with bug deflectors but instead of pullling everything out from the inside-he pulls up the outer windsheild gaskets,cl3eans them and then applies black silicone to the inside-i had him do this to my avalanche-it took him five minutes and i have gone on at least four roadtrips since then and not a sound-this way is cheaper and easier and so far it works.
just an idea-again thanks for all of the input :B:

I would assume both, since its the windshield weather stripping causing the noise, and I believe that area is the same for both. Of course, the bug shield may have a different shape, thuis causing different wind flow

Good question ???

the bug sheild is definately different, that's why I was wondering. It seems like everybody on this thread is cladded. ???

Don't know if you other guys experience this as well, but even after doing the windshield flap fix, my driver's side side mirror always shakes now while driving at decent speeds.....I suspect the bug shield again :p

I don't have that problem, you could take the thing off to find out. As long as you didn't use the 3M tape on the install.

Yea, I'm pretty sure its the bug shield, since I never noticed it before I put it on. Has anyone had this problem and fixed it.

Obviously, I could remove the bug shield to fix it, but I like it (painted to match) (y)

Thanks in advance,
Gator

you don't have to take it off permanentlty. just long enough to find out if it's that or the mirror somehow.

I just got an OEM deflector off ebay, from a GM Parts dealer, and it came without the tape strips. The directions from GM are dated 6 AUG 03. Can anyone tell me what the date on the directions are that include the adhesive strips?

Not sure it is worth making a big deal about it, but one of the reasons I bought an OEM is so I didn't have to buy the trim seperately, after reading this thread. So my thoughts are, if it is sold be a GM dealer, and the item description states
"2002-2004 CHEVROLET AVALANCHE BUG DEFLECTOR / SHIELD

INCLUDES:

MOUNTING HARDWARE

AND COMPLETE INSTALLATION & INSTRUCTION MANUAL

THIS AUCTION IS ON A BUG SHIELD/ DEFLECTOR AND INSTALLATION KIT

FOR 2002-2004 CHEVROLET AVALANCHE

THIS DEFLECTOR IS AN AUTHENTIC GM PART MADE TO FIT ABOVE MENTIONED MODELS

Then it should come with the latest directions and mounting hardware.

Guess I'll email them and see, but if anyone has their directions handy and can give me the date on the current instructions, I'd appreciate it!
Thanks

I just sent them an email :

Had a question about the mounting hardware. It was my understanding that the hardware was to include to strips of double-sided tape, to re-enforce the windshield trim. This is to reduce the wind chatter caused by the deflector.

I see the directions are the inital release, from 6 AUG 03. Should there have been a more current revision of the directions included, with the trim tape added to the install hardware?

The reason I bought from y'all is because you are a GM parts dealer, and I figured I would get the latest release, after reading about all the problems with the initial release of the deflector and GM adding the tape to fix the problem.

The deflector arrived in one piece, but the box was destroyed, having come open on one end; it was crushed flat around the deflector. Gotta love UPS! lol

We'll see what they say...

Here is the reply I got back from the dealer:
HEY MIKE
WE DON'T INSTALL THE 3M TAPE HERE WHEN INSTALL THEM.
KEEP THE STUFF AND PUT IT ASIDE, "IF" YOU NEED IT, YOU WILL HAVE IT, BUT I
REALLY DON'T THINK YOU WILL EVER NEED IT.
I DON'T KNOW OF ANYONE THAT INSTALLS THAT TAPE. IF IT STARTS RATTLING, TAKE
IT TO A GM DEALER, AFTER ALL IT'S WARRANTY !
GM WARRANTY IS TRYING TO GET OUT OF PAYING FOR WARRANTY, SO THEY SEND THESE
LITTLE ADDENDUMS, BUT, IF YOU HAVE MOLDING RATTLE (AND I DOUBT YOU WILL)
TAKE IT TO THE DEALER AND LET THEM WARRANTY IT, IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH
THEM , CALL ME AND I'LL GO TO BAT FOR YOU. THAT'S WHAT WE ARE HERE FOR.
LET ME KNOW IF I'VE ANSWERED ALL YOUR QUESTIONS,IF NOT GIVE ME A SHOUT, MY
NUMBER IS BELOW.

PS. YES WE WERE HAVING A HARD TIME WITH UPS, SO ARE NOW ON A TRIAL RUN WITH
FED EX.......NOT MANY TO CHOOSE FROM (AND THEY KNOW IT TOO !)

THANKS MIKE AND HAVE A SAFE AND ENJOYABLE HOLIDAY WEEKEND.

I may be wrong, but I don't think my dealer is going to "warrenty" anything I bought over the internet and installed myself... right?

Guess I'll install it, and if I have a problem, I'll write back and have them send me the tape.
