Going To The Dealer Today! How Much?

GUEST
I live in Golden Colorado, not employed by GM, but do have the $2003 on my GM Card.

I'm looking at a Pewter 2003 with only the off road package. Invoice is 31,912...Window sticker 36,373. I'm looking at the 2.9 over 5 years.

Looking for a place to start haggling. I've never bought a new auto before and have always had pretty cheap vehicles. Where would y'all begin?

Thanks for any ideas!!!

In my case, I found the Edmund's TMV site to be great. It lists the cost of all the options and gives you a fair price to ask. I started slightly below the TMV when negotiated over the phone with the sales manager of the place were I bought my Av. By the time I went to the dealer, they had all the paperwork ready to go and I was out of there quick. (y)

Good luck with your purchase. :)

Start out by stating your price, at invoice is fair, but if you want to be bold, wait until the 31st and start at $300.00 lower than invoice. (The actual dealer cost, after tha company pays the dealer is about 3.0% of the MSRP lower than invoice)

Set the price you are willing to pay, then subtract the rebate and GM card dollars. After all that is set, then you can discuss any trade, but not before!

Also, at that price, you are probably better taking the rebate and financing elsewhere, rather than doing 2.9%. But, just do the math on rebate versus interest saved. Cash up front has a lot of value. Check your local credit union for rates. The one I run is currently offering 4.75% for 60 months. It is better to take the rebate of $2,500 and pay 4.75% than to pay $2,500 to get 2.9%.

Thanks for the link...

I guess I asked this question in response to some of the "what deal did you get" people who seem to be walking away from the dealer with the Av and more money in their pocket than when they arrived...Now, I don't always believe those posts, and none of them really say that, but if I was to really play some hardball, what price...that's what I was thinking...maybe the fair price is sort of what that TMV site gives, though, huh?

How much would you save doing the former?

Invoice plus or minus $500 is fair. Bottom line is the General is dealing something fierce! If you can find an old 2002 laying around you can get another $1,000 cash back! ;D

The Edmund's site is a good one to get the invoice price. I ordered mine at a couple hundred over invoice. Of course I could have had one a LOT sooner if I'd have let them get one from another dealer....but then the deal would have changed for the worse :(

Oh well, another three weeks left before delivery... :C:

Thanks for the input, guys.

So I pull into the lot yesterday and I see that they're putting the dealer plates on the Av I've been looking at. When they came back, they were writing down the VIN number and doing the paperwork.

I really don't care...there are alot of Avs around and I'm not sure I liked the Pewter color that much anyway.

On a side note, I applied for a load through ELOAN.COM and got back approval for plenty of money for 4.85%. Has anyone used them? Any hassles or issues?

YO! It's mine! 2003, blue, 10 miles. Dealer financed me for 4.75% so I got the rebate plus my 2003 gm cash. Truck was 100 BELOW invoice, but they had that nasty 299 dealer charge which I knew about...

Thanks for all your help, pics soon!!!

This is a MUST! Negotiate a cash price and then enter the trade. Take a print out from Kelly Blue book www.kbb.com or some other online appraisal to the dealership.
