:B:Has anybody here used this on their Av or around the home? I have the Bikerchic handle covers and thought of using it to assist the 3M tape. :B:

gorilla glue is a fabulous product but i wouldn't recommend it for that application. after you put it on it kinda expands and foams and i would not want to have to clean that off paint.

  :eek:it works,,great product,,dont put on very much,,had a cap on one of my front teeth to come loose,so i cleaned the post good, cleaned out the cap real good and dried both with tissue paper,,then a very little gorilla glue in center of the cap,,then place it on the post and held it tight for 5 minutes and presto saved 200 bucks,,,no dentist,,good stuff, didnt foam or swell,,just like a gorilla holding...abuelito

I've used this stuff as well and it does hold extremely well in certain applications. Like most things use a small amount, with any glue more is not really better.

I've never tried it on a vehicle, but I would assume when applied properly it'll work just as well.

I used a bead of clear silicone around the entire edge of the handles and they are solid, plus the weather can't get to the 3M tape. (y)

Silicone would be my suggestion. (y)

I've used Gorilla Glue for woodworking, and while it works great in that application, it can be very messy. Both the foaming as it cures, and the fact that it is very difficult to clean up (think sticky thick maple syrup that doesn't wash off in water!) would make me very hesitant to get that stuff anywhere near my truck.

With a woodworking project you can scrape off most of the cured excess, then sand off the remainder. I wouldn't want to do either to my Av.

:B:Are there different types of silicone glue? Would Autozone sell an automotive type and Lowes sell a different type? I won the handle covers at the Paris Landing, TN GTG and need to get them out of the box and use them. Thanks for the feedback. :B:

I don't think there are specific types, just different colors and containers. I've seen all the basic colors, plus toothpaste tubes, and small and large caulk gun tubes. Unless you are also going to caulk your tub and windows at the same time, I would think one of the small toothpaste style tubes that you can find just about anywhere would be all you need. Wether you go to an auto parts store, home improvement warehouse, grocery store, or department store chain, I would think it is all pretty much the same. The price may vary, but I doubt the product really changes.

There are different type for different applications. Some adhere better to one substrate than others. Others are designed to handle saltwater or UVs better than others.

As for, gorilla glue... it is an expanding glue and probably not the best for this application.

Actually, now that I think about it, you are right. There is even a special version used for gluing together the glass for an aquarium which doesn't leach out chemicals that would kill the fish. (Normal silicone sealant should never be used in an aquarium!) There are also versions that handle high temperatures for chimey flues and engine gaskets.

So yes, there are special esoteric types out there, but for sealing/adhering a door handle overlay, I would think that the normal toothpaste tube of GE Silicone II caulk would work fine, and it shouldn't matter where you get it. (At least it'll be better than the polyurethane Gorilla Glue.)

The one thing not mentioned about Gorrilla glue is that it only cures in the presense of water. Put the glue on 1 side and dampen the other. It's awesome stuff...

Now for the handles, I wouldn't worry about the 3M tape. Remember half of the Av is put together with it ;) I've had mine on for quite a while, and have not had a problem with it.

Abuelito - The Gorilla Glue will serve the purpose of holding your crown on for a short or even long time. Unfortunately, the cement used to put a crown on has TWO main purposes. 1 - hold the crown on (this is actually the least important of the two.) 2 - seal out the bacteria that cause decay from getting under the crown. I don't think the Gorilla glue could seal out all 360 degrees of the margin of the crown. Bacteria are like termites, if there is a teeny tiny opening, they will get in and wreak havoc. If the glue is strong enough to hold the crown on for a long time, the decay will attack the remaining healthy tooth structure until the whole tooth rots and breaks. I assume, if it has a post, it has had a root canal. By the time the tooth breaks, it may not be restorable, and then it needs to be extracted. Then you are looking at an implant or a three unit bridge. Those two choices are about $2,800 - $5,000, depending on where you live and who you see. Your $200 saved will end up costing you a lot more in the future. I would suggest you see a dentist in the next few weeks or months to fix the problem with some dental cement, rather than the Gorilla Glue.

I am not trying to poo-poo your ingenious solution to a common problem. In a pinch, it sounds like it worked great. I am just trying to save you a ton of cash from future dental work so you will have more to mod with. I just happen to do a little dental work in between modding my AV.

P.S. Re-cementing a crown should be no more than $50-$100. If it is, try someone else or get a referral from a good and trusted friend.

Let me get this straight. You used a product called "Gorilla Glue" for an at-home do-it-yourself reglue-your-busted-tooth dental project?

Anybody got Jeff Foxworthy's phone number handy?

Bought some at Home Depot and aggree with everyone else a little goes a long way

We quit using silicone caulks and adhesives a few years ago. Look for a product called Lexel at your home center or hardware store. It's tougher than silicone and won't strip or zipper like silicone can. And, for Av applications, it's paintable. About the only thing it's not good for is submersion like on an aquarium, but then again, I hope that's not a problem with my Avy.
