:8: Well, I was rear ended for the second time in two weeks. My AV hitch plug got bent when I was hit by an acura. No damage to bumper :) Then I bought a GoRhino hitch step, put it on two days ago then was rear ended tonite by a honda. Both hits were at about 10mph each. I was stopped at a light both times, go figure. Hitchstep is totally bent and is garbage now :8:

I do have the WAAG rear bumper guard installed, but when you get hit by cars, the car hits the hitch area since it is lower than the bumper itself.

I would like to know if there is a product out there which you can install into the hitch that will not break or bend. Something like a 1" thick steel plate with metal spikes attached to a ballmount >:D

I just tend to leave the ball and receiver in the hitch this way if I do get hit they nver reach the bumper to do any damage. I do that now because I got hit a couple of years back in my bronco and the receiver held up with just a few scratches.

sorry to hear about the hitch step atleast that was all it was.

By the way after to rear endings that you were both stopped at traffic lights HOW is your back????

do this and they will miss the hitch and hit the bumper.

Hi Lordvader,

While I haven't gotten hit yet in my AV, I have noticed people have been pulling out in front of me or coming into my lane more than when I had my little Ranger. I bet I avoided half a dozen accidents last weekend because of people not paying attention. What I can't figure out is why people can't see the huge Avalanche coming at them or right beside them?

I agree that the trailer ball sticking out would minimize the damage to the rear-end. My brother was backing out of the driveway in my father's truck one day and I had my Cavalier parked behind him and he didn't see it.
The trailer hitch went through the grill and bent the hood up real bad. The truck didn't have a scratch on it.

:3: Well, at least I am not dead, nor anything on my body hurts, except wallet :8: I will get a hitch ballmount and I guess that will help a great deal.

I think a big-ass load-leveling trailer hitch is going to be the hot ticket here! >:D

Where do you get that?
Try a trailer accessories/RV store. They aren't as cheap as a standard hitch though. You may be able to find a used one in the classifieds.

Hmmm. I was considering getting that Rhino Hitch Step. Does anyone think that would be a bad idea?

Realy , glad to hear u didn't get hurt.
I just found out the guy who slamed my AV july 12th, is contesting his ticket. And I was stoped for a light. ?AHGH! $3200 to the rear of my AV. Wreched back, still today! Just stoped the hardcore meds last week.
Now I have to go to court, August 23. Oh well. :7:

Go Get this guy and make the judge make him pay!! He hurt you, your AV and he sounds like an idiot... Geez hit a non-moving vehicle and "Gee.. Its not my fault"...

I am not a Sue-happy individual, but you should go after this guy.... >:D

Many guys here have them (I don't) and like them. I am considering one.

Several people said it was good bumper protection in parking lots. Seeing as lordvader's got bent up when he was rear-ended, he will probably disagree. On the other hand, it looks like it sacrificed itself so the rest of the truck could live. A new hitchstep has got to be cheaper than a new bumper and cladding! And also much easier to replace.

Just my $0.02

lordvader: Make the idiot who ran into you buy you a new hitch step! Glad you hear neither you nor the truck are hurt.

I'm very sorry to hear about the rear endings. I live in California where they are common. :(

Only, here in the People's Republic, many people do not have insurance and there is no annual safety inspection, so it's possible to have an accident with a vehicle with bald tires and it's doors held on by baling wire... :8:

I have my drop-down style trailer ball inverted, so instead of dropping down to trailer height, it goes UP, kinda like an r. When I get rear-ended (it's bound to happen here in Sacramento), I plan on saying, "How do you like my trailer hitch? I put it on there just for you!" >:D
Hopefully, the victim will be some guy driving a Subaru with a GreenPeace sticker on it. >:D

Sorry to hear about your unfortunate situation. However, I agree with the others... A nice receiver hitch with ballmount should do the trick. I had one on my previous vehicle and I personally believe it kept people away and aware.

>:D well, I bought a hitch ballmount. The shaft is solid steel and the length is 12 inches, plus i am adding a nice ss 2" ball. The drop is 4", so I will turn it up. :8: Let them hit me now!!!!!!! :3:

Sounds like you plan on doing a little bumper fishin' there LordVader. :)

My Dad did something similar. He has a tendancy to get rearended by small cars. So he put a extended hitch on it with a ball so that he would at least take out their radiator and fan the next time. >:D

Usually when I'm on the Interstate, people move out of my way when they see the Big Blue Ave comeing up behind them, Don't know how they could miss you!
