hey everyone i got a problem when i drive my avalanche in reverse and my wheels are turned right i get a kind of grinding sound anyone have any clue what it would be?? it only does it when the wheels are turned to the right and NOT to the left

Have not heard of that myself 48chevy but I would not hesitate to have it looked at. Wish I could help.

Hope it is taken care of for you.

Mine does that, too...

I know for sure it does it when the wheel is turned to the left....can't remember if it does it when it's turned to the right.

It is an annoying sound...almost like the raised letters on the tires are scraping the hard plastic mudflaps.

I haven't had the opportunity to have someone else back the AV out of my driveway so I could observe the wheels from the outside.

lietenant5 exactly it sounds like the tire is rubbing on the plastic
splash guard but it never did it until just a few weeks ago think ill wait to see if i get anymore responce on what the problem could be before i call the dealer

What year and version AVY do you have?

2002 had problems with parking brakes....?

Could be wire or brake line rubbing something?

Mine is an '02 Z71...

Can you give me more info on the brake issue you mentioned??

It is a pretty nasty noise....but only happens in reverse and when the wheels are turned fairly hard to one side.

Look in this section... http://www.chevyavalanchefanclub.com/cafcna/index.php?board=149

a few threads exist discussing the parking brake problem...HTH

I've got an 02 that does it, too, but only when it's in 4WD and occassionally in Auto4WD. It's not really bad but when I hear it I usually punch the 2WD button and the noise goes away.

I have had the same grinding noise. It is more apparant when you turn but it is always there. If you drive next to a building like a drive through dry cleaners you can hear it reflect off of the wall. It bothered me for some time as well and visual inspection revealed nothing. I went to wash my truck (about a week ago) after a 40 minute drive and when the water reached the back disc brakes it sizzled (bad thing). I removed the wheel, caliper and pulled the disc off of the axel. The parking brake is a drum brake inside the disc brake housing. It has worn an excessive groove in the housing and must be replaced. The piston for the brake operates properly but it seems to be an alignment issue with the brake pad system. I closed it up and will take it to the dealer for a first look as I think it is a manufacturing defect. I saw another thread where a TSB was referenced. I have requested a copy to take with me from the member. You may have an intermittent error light for your antilock brakes (amber) and brakes (red) due to this problem. The cost to replace just the disc assembly is $96 to $128 each (Advanced Auto Parts) and I have it on both sides. The drum brake pad assembly will have to be replaced as well (dealer part). It is worth noting that the drum brake pad was wearing on the tailgate side only. The wear would be more uniform if you drove around with the parking brake engaged. I will report back when I contact the dealer.
