Hand Grabs @ Rear Of Bed

??? Has anyone else noticed any cracks extending from the center mount bolt on the rear hand grabs? Seems to be made of some mighty brittle plastic material, both of mine are cracked. Visited this alot but is my first post, hello............
 
I hadn't used mine a whole either, I don't have any pics just yet but to notice you need to look hard as they are hairline cracks, possible over torque of the bolts at assy.?????
 
It could be the powder coat cracking.......

Mine are fine...
 
Both of mine are cracked. I just have not seen anything prior written about them and wanted to give ya'all a heads up of a potential problem. I took delivery in May of 2001 so it may take time and be attributed to the hot summers we have down here.
 
I'm going out to check mine. They were fine last time I looked. Sounds like they may have been overtightened.

hey Rondoe, welcome to the site. Thanks for the heads up. May '01 delivery date? What's your "build date" (check placard inside drivers door)
 
a little off the subject, but has anyone seem pics of an Escalade EXT with chrome grab handles? i have seen this somewhere. cannot remember where though. might be a good upgrade if your handles are cracked. i will look for this pic again carefully. when i find out where i saw it i will post it. would go good with chrome towhooks and handles.
 
Yes ... chrome grab handles would be cool. I haven't seen any though. I think the EXT's stock handles actually look cheap compared to ours. They have more of a smooth plastic look to them.
 
i found the pic of the EXT with the chrome grab handles. it is in the Nov 02 issue of Motor Trend magazine on page 75. they look as if they are chrome to me. can someone help confirm this?
i cthought i was wrong at my second look once i found it. but, if you look at the other chrome accessories on the truck they give off the same hue/color. ???
 
OK I'm back, I've been out of the loop for a while, to answer the build date question, mine aslo shows the build date as 05/01, I took delivery 22MAY01. I actually ordered it in late FEB 01. Ordered it direct from GM through a GM rep, not a dealer. Was told it was the first [one of the first I assume] to be delivered in the Southeast. I drove for 2 months without seeing another one, which was fun cause it was the main attraction everywhere I went ;D
 
Mine is a 5/01 build.
Can't see any problems, I would guess overtightening as opposed to weather.
Mine has seen MO, MT and south TX and if extremes would crack them, I should be cracked.
 
I have no cracks in mine but I have repainted the mounting screws/bolts as the sunlight in FL does a job on flat black
 
Both of mine have the line going up, had went to the dealer the next day after post and we looked at them. He seems to think it is part of the mold process and like YGMN said powder coating flaking off of that part. Does not look like it is all the way through.

How many miles do you have?
 
i looked at my handles while at the gas station tonight. at first i thought my handle was cracked. :7: then i looked a bit more carefully and realized it might have been the molding cast. then i went to the other side. the other side looked exactly like the previous. so what are the chances that both handles would have cracked the exact same way, place, and length. highly unlikely! so i think i am ok. ;D
