Has Anyone Struck A Deal With OnStar?

Last year I talked them down to $150 by telling them they were going to loose my onstar calling minutes which has to be extremely profitable at .35 a minute. ;)

Thanks Bruno!

Anyone else get a better deal than the standard $199 a year?

I'd like to hear what deals you got, and how.

I am planning to call OnStar tommorrow.

Thanks,

SpottyJ

I still haven't decided about re-upping, although I have quite a while....I'm only 2 months into my initial free year. Don't really use it. Don't really intend to. But the airbag thing, remote unlock and diagnostics keeps me thinking about it. They are just too d*mn expensive, though.

As far as the unlock goes, can they lock the vehicle also? Anyone know?

I'd love to be able to use the phone, but they are hopelessly overpriced. But as long as I subscribe to OnStar, couldn't I just call them up and buy some minutes if I'm in a situation where I need to make a personal call and my cell phone can't get a signal? Sure, it'd be a pain and take a few minutes, but I would almost never use it anyway, and I wouldn't have to worry about the minutes expiring.

Any reason OnStar won't let you do that?

If they can unlock the doors then they can lock them as well. I have friend that bought a new Tahoe a couple of years ago and while out dirving around one day decided to call and do a theft test. The On* operator asked how he could help and my buddy said that he just wanted to test the theft stop (or whatever they call it) feature. The rep said no problem and to call him back when he was ready to start driving again. Well, he continues driving down the road a little ways and is wondering when or if the thing is going to work. He comes to a stop at a stop and go light. He is about to hit the On* button when the motor stops and the doors lock. And he can't start the truck or do anything.

So, he calls On* and asks the rep to reinstate access. He does and asks if that was satisfactory. He sd yes and they hooked him back up and he was on his way.

BTW - My wife is a Captain in the Air Force Res. and sd that the officers in her unit and others were informed not to talk about sensitive intel when in GM vehicles as the On* was a passive system and there was no way to know if one is being listened to.

My wife likes it in the Mini Van, and considering that is the main vehicle for transporting her and the kids I will keep it there. Just not sure if I will go for it when I buy my AV. Expensive and a little too Big Brotherish.

I called OnStar today, and mentioned the $149 rate for 14 months some members have stated receiving. The supervisor offered $198. for a year, a whole $2. off retail. I had them cancel my acct.

So, has anyone else got a better deal than the standard $199 a year?

I'd like to hear what deals you got, and how.

Thanks,

Man that sucks....

Onstar Nightmare!!! :8:

My Onstar renewal was due back in Feb. I kept ignoring the phone calls and the letters they were sending because the onstar and phone service never seemed to work. Everytime they said they corrected the problem it still wasn't working right so I said why bother to pay for a service that isn't working. Well sure enough every month I notice a charge of $17 and change on my credit card bill. They automatically took it upon themselves to put the renewal fee on my credit card because it was in their system when I had purchased units for the phone. So if you do not plan to continue the service make sure you don't just ignore the letters or the calls if you have a credit card already in their system. Because they will just automatically renew on their own.

CHEVYGIRL_23:

Wow, sorry about your troubles.

I called OnStar via the "Blue" dot and had them remove my credit card record. I call them a few weeks later via landline phone and they still have the credit card on file. I had them remove again, and I asked them for it a letter stating credit card info was removed, they refused the letter. :8:

I've had my moments with OnSpar ever since I activated it a few days after getting the Avalanche.

When I bought another OnSpar equipped vehicle this winter, I asked the dealer not to activate as I already had an account and wanted to speak with them myself.

They activated it anyway and we initially ended up with different area code than ours. It took a few days to resolve it but OnSpar could not guarantee they could do it, in this lifetime.

Anyway, in early August my account was due and I called them late on the eve of expiration.

I told the polite guy how disappointed I was after 14 months of OnSpar and was not sure I wanted to renew. I mentioned one of our members managed to get 12 months of S&S for $150.

I asked him what he could do to convince me to stay with them. He started in to the sales pitch for the S&S. When he was finished I asked if he could throw in 100 minutes of Personal Calling time with the 12 month life span.

He said no problem.

By my math I ended up with the S&S for $199 less the $39.99 for the minutes. It seemed fair to me.

A few days ago the moment I started up the Avalanche at Home Depot, the OnSpar starting to ring. I answered it as I expected their Service Department to be calling. It was a wrong number.

A few months after I bought the other car, OnSpar called and offered to sell us 100 minutes for 19.99m 12 month expiration. I tried to get them to sell me the same package for the Avalanche, but he wouldn't budge.

I'm still not sure it was OnSpar that really called. I never buy anything over the phone unless I initiate the call.

It wouldn't hurt to ask for anything, but let them know they have to convince you that you want it.

Good Luck

Don't hold your breath...

I spent better part of an hour with them trying to get a deal and they wouldn't have any of it... Told them about our group... They check webpage and tried calling phone number... (out of service or no answer :E: :E:)

Spoke to 2 different supervisors that would not do a thing other than their standard charges.

I don't buy it that anyone is getting any better deals... And as far as tracking your car in an emergency, can't be certain that that will work either.

I don't NEED it any longer... Would I like it for an emergency situation, yes... but not without some type of deal...

Sorry OutStar... I am outta here!

Just my .02 worth,

GMAN

I'm with you GMAN, mine is up in Feb. I don't care what kind of deal they give me, it's way too much for the service. In the three years I've had it, I never really needed it.

AVid

Yes it is an overpriced service for sure ... And as far as tracking a stolen vehical it is usless unless a 10 year old stole your truck.. If you are worried about theft .. go with an aftermarket tracking system .. One that works unlike onstar ..

My $.02

Stan

Geez, I sure don't want to spend an hour trying to get a deal. Maybe I'll pass. If anyone is getting better than 199 a year, please jump in!

I just renewed my subscription. I was on the phone with them and talked to, I think, 3 diferent people. 1 from the sales, 1 in customer service and the other was the customer service mgr - who wouldn't lower the price no matter what I said. I wanted the same deal I got last year $169. But they claimed that I had gotten that deal because of a special. It took me about 40 minutes last year to get that deal. BELIEVE ME IT WASN'T A SPECIAL. I'm sure if it was a special they would have told me that in the first 5 minutes!!!!!

The mgr this year could only offer me 50 minutes of calling time. Well, that was good enough for me. That's worth about $30 - MAYBE.

They should just make that offer for everyone!!! Then maybe more people would renew their subscriptions, also.

Good luck
Troy :B:

I just figure that it is a waste of money. If my truck is ever stolen I already have Lojack if it doesn't work I will call up onstar and activate it, at the end of the conversation tell them its been stolen and could they find it for me. ;D

If your truck has been stolen there is little chance you will be able to "activate" OnSap! the thieves will have already disabled it and you need to hit the buton in the truck to activate it .. So you will be sol...
