Inever used my OnStar service because I bought my AV out of state and they gave me an Area Code not used in my state. Now I find my seldom used cell phone is not worth renewing for $50 a month. I called OnStar twice and got the run around because they did not know the answer and wanted me to renew my OnStar service to get an answer??
My question is .... can I have my current cell telephone number ported over to my OnStar phone, thus keeping my same number
TIA
Not sure this will answer your questions...not sure I have enough of your info to answer your questions...but let's give it a try...
When we bought the Av they asked us which area code we wanted (in the San Fran Bay area there are 3 area codes...415 / 510 / 925 )...They gave a number in the Area Code we wanted...
OnStar charges waaaaaaay to much money for their "AirTime" minutes...but over the first couple years we bought them anyway...and at one point our contract was up for renewal with a lot of unused Air Time minutes remaining which were due to expire with the contract...we bargained our way into a deal..."want us to renew? Renew the unused minutes into the new contract"...they did and we did...
Later we decided to consolodate some expenses...
We are Verizon Wireless customers with our cell phones...have a "family share plan"...2 cell phones
We dumped our "land line" phone service and use our cell phones exculsively...except that...
Onstar can add the Avalanche (actually any Chevy with OnStar) to your Verizon Account...in our case a 3rd family member...and the minutes are "shared" with your Verizon Family Share Plan...
So for us...the Airtime and fees look like this...
1. Verizon Family Share Plan = First phone $XX.00 per month with 500 shared minutes
2. Second phone = $9.95 per month and shares the 500 minutes
3. Avalanche phone = $9.95 per month and shares the 500 minutes
4. No long distance charges
5. Free minutes to any Verizon member means we don't use any minutes when using cell to cell or cell to Av or Av to cell...
We now don't buy ANY airtime minutes from OnStar...all 3 "phones" are billed to us by Verizon....one account one bill
Yes you have to pay OnStar the minimum contract fee for whatever service you want with them to keep the phone "activated"...we have the cheapest...the "Safe and Souind" plan...and bought a 2 year contract to reduce the effective amount per month...but overall with no landline at home...the 2 cell phones and the Av on the Family Share Plan we are "out less per month" by a considerable amount.
How some or all of the above may help you decide what to do or how to do it I don't know...but I hope some of it has been helpful. My overriding advise is to say...don't do OnStar if you only plan to use their airtime minutes for phone calls...Even if you only make a few calls the price per minute of airtime is high...and if you want to save money on your "investment" you have to buy a lot of minutes that you will have to bargain hard for to have them extended to a new contract...
But if you consider "deleting" the cost of a land line (home phone)...and consider becoming a Verizon Family Share member...you might save $$$ depending on the number and type of calls you make on a regular basis...
For us it works BIG TIME...for others it could end up being more expensive...
