Check this from search Mass Air Flow - please read carefully, depending on the state of your mods this could cause you to run lean and damage your engine, in any event the screen is not your limiting factor at this point.

Thanks for the guidence! I am leaving the screen in. It doesn't seem to be worth the hassle. Maybe after I add a 80mm throttle body....hhhhmmmm?

Hard to imagine that someone at a CHEVY dealership would volunteer to do something to help you void the warranty. At least, if you replace the MAS with one from Granatelli, you will have their warranty. If someone cuts the screen, if will have NO warranty on that part. ??? Just my $.02176 (same as USPS % incr)

No. I haven't.

shameless POST

Dont look past this mod on a basic bolt on vehicle. Actually i'm thinking several things for my AV. As far a Cheap mods $$ wise that actually work. On my Z28 5.7 LS1 (I know its not a 5.3 BUT Still same basic setup) I did Remove my screen on the MAF. AND I actually got out the dremmel and hacksaw and i Ported mine out the polished it up! Made a NICE diffrence on top end for shure!!! After i Installed my Cam and all i had to go back to a stocker because of lean condidtions. But for a stock vehicle it will work fine. The screen on our AV's can just be removed for improvments. Also then you can port your own throtle body! Thats good for about 10RWHP on the 5.7 LS1. Thats my next mod on the Z i plan on hooking the AV up while i'm at it. And For the intake. I'm looking at that one in the morning. I think i can get away alot cheaper there. Seems the AV market is high $$. Alot more than it is to buy mods for the Z28

Ahhhhh here it is....if I may add my .02...My knowledge in this area is ONLY based on reading about MAFs from other sites and owning a Corvette...Many LS-1 owners remove the MAF...especially Corvette owners (I have not because I have found many fellow '01s that remove the screen to run lean and therefore it is NOT worth it to me) this is (by the way...'02 Z06 Corvettes DO NOT HAVE A SCREEN) because on the Corvette...it is nearly a STRAIGHT SHOT form the air cleaner to the throttle body...The C5 Corvette uses the same MAF as I have in my Av...Consequently...on the Av, it IS NOT A STRAIGHT SHOT from air intake to throttle body (through the MAF) and the screen was designed as an AIR STRAIGHTENER. ?Therefore, I believe it would NOT be advantageous to remove the screen.
You are free to disagree but I thought I would add this information for what it's worth...I am sure at least one guy will disagree. This MAY spell trouble for the "tornado" and other similar "power" producing products. :7: :8:  ;D ;) (y)

I've heard that removing the screen will increase airflow. The screen does serve a purpose by helping air flow at the same rate. Faster moving turbulent air is not as efficient as smooth flowing air. Right???

Y'all please read this carefully - your screen is not limiting your airflow and serves a purpose - if you remove it you may well run lean, depending on what your mods are, and damage your engine.

And yes, mine is descreened, and I have 5 foot of pipe, and a Whipple, and a compensating computer - do that and you can take yours off also.
