head gasket

My 2005 1500 with around 150000 miles is over heating. I took it to the mechanic and he replaced a couple of hoses and refilled the antifreeze. He said if it continued I would need to replace the head gasket.
How much does that usually run? Is it worth it or could it be just a downward spiral after that? Had the transmission replaced around 5000 miles ago.
Really like the truck but don't want to dump a lot of money in it when I could just get a newer one.

I would take it to a more equipped mechanic and have the system pressure checked, could be a bad thermostat, water pump, blocked radiator/debris between the two cores and so on. The head gasket could run a grand or more with today's shop rates.
