Headrest Issues In The 03 Avalanche

A

av03nwind

GUEST
Just took delivery last night of a 2500/03 Avalanche.
Love the truck but I HATE the headrests. I vaguely remember someone saying the 02 articulated headrests would work on the 03. Hopefully the leather color is the same. Why would Chevy do something so stupid?

What is better about the articulated headrests?

I have an '03 and I haven't noticed anything bad
about the head rests.

Similarly, I wonder why gm removed the light
under the hood. And the lumbar support on the
bench seats.

I guess a few bucks saved a hundred thousand
times adds up. :)

av03nwind, ? Welcome to CAFCNA ?(y)

I like the 02 articulating headrests better also.
I assume that the 2500 and 1500 are the same??
Yes it can be done...see below:

:)

I guess you don't miss what you haven't had!!
The articulating headrests really add to the comfort and fit of the leather seat on the 02. If you look in the 03 brochure, it lists articulating headrests, but where are they??
I test drove the 03 and noticed them missing. The dealer told me to just order a set of 02 headrests from the parts department and switch them. I could also order the 02 under the hood light and the 02 lumbar support and the 02 side airbag and the 02........
Hey, a few bucks here, a few bucks there, The General needs the money.

There is a set of the 2003 headrests on Ebay right now. It seems a lot of 2003 owners want the 2002 type.

Are the '03 headrests leather? I have an '02 and they are vinyl just like the armrest. Not for nothing, how much more could it cost to wrap them in the crappy leather the seats are done in?

I was thinking about ordering a set of lambskin covers for the headrests and the armrests to cover the vinyl. Autosport will custom fit them for the truck and give you a color sample for your approval.

Anybody know the cost and or part # for a pair of 2002 charcoal leather articulating headrests. I want to replace my 2003 headrests? Thanks :)

Peach========
I was given this # by parts direct
but have never been able to confirm it is the right color

GM # 12477296

I got my 02 headrests from Dal, one of the sponsors on the top of the page, and paid $287 for the pair. I had a 02 and really missed those head rests. Other things that I got screwed on the trade but dont miss as much are the already mentioned hood light as well as adjustable intensity visor mirror lights, locking center consloe, Gold bowties sewed in seat backs on all four seats. I guess the pennies add up.

P.S I have the 03 head rests on Ebay.

Has anybody had any trouble with the articulating headrests in the Av? i have a 2002 and i can't seem to get them to stay in place when i move them forward, I may have broke them inside the headrest but am unsure, I heard a click or snap once when I was in the backseat and used them as a handle to pull myself forward to talk to the front seat passenger.
One more question, how much are replacements? ballpark figures.

To note why they *probably* changed them...

On mine (and several others) we had to learn not to Lean on the headrests when removing a wallet from our back pockets. If you did, and the headrest was articulated, you would get a big "BANG" as it snapped backwards.

I have had 2 sets on my AV already and they probably don't want to replace them all next year too!! I love the fact that they articulate, but they are a little delicate!!

Crew, I think the headrest are designed to break away under too much load like that. I've had mine pop back a few times after leaning on them too hard and had trouble getting it to catch again... until I figured out that you have to pull the headrest all the way forward to reset 3 position latch that catches inside the headrest. Its almost like the latch mechinism stays in its position and the head rest breaks away under a heavy load (pulling on it too hard from back seat or leaning back to get the wallet out too hard).. just pull the head rest forward all the way forward and then let it all the way back and it should reset the latching mechinism inside the head rest. It should click, click, click to its 3 positions

hey thanks for the info. I am out of town right now but I will have to try that out when I get back. Hopefully that works, I really liked having the headrests in the forward position.
