I am going to purchase a set of JBA headers ;D How can I tell if I have EGR ??? Or AIR ??? Pics are much apprieciated (y)

Thanks

Josh

Look for an extra pipe sticking out vertically from the exhaust manifold on the passenger side. It has a two bolt flange about 2 inches across. No pipe = no EGR/Air.

Search on "headers" and you will find a picture or two.

I took some Pics. Do I or Dont I ???

Thanks Again guys (y)

Josh:

My Av doesn't have either AIR or EGR, I don't think any of the 1500's do except possibly the California-certified trucks.

You didn't show the whole manifold in your pictures so you can't really tell from them either.

You don't have an EGR Valve. That bump sticking through the heat shield, right under the #4 cylinder exhaust port, is where it would mount.

Sweet (y) Thanks for the help guys ;) Next question, Do you guys recommend the JBA's or should I look into something different ???

Josh

Hey Josh, as I figured your truck didn't have either air or egr. If your gonna spend the money go for some long tube headers from arizona speed and marine. I would not waste my money on shorty headers if they are not going to make a big improvement.

They do look Nice (y) But I'm kind of worried about warrenty issues  And the more simple the installation the better. I would have to have somebody weld them up.

Josh

I doubt you will have any warrantee issues but you would have to have someone weld them up. But it all comes down to when you burry the pedal for the first time after installing them, then you know it will be worth it >:D

Alex

I guess I will talk to my service Department about them. Once the JBA's are ceramic coated they come out to almost the same price anyway  Thanks for your input Alex (y)

Hey Josh,

You might want to talk to one of the CT Boyz on this... We just had a conversation on Saturday on this. (Mini Meet/GTG (y) (y))

BUTCH, the water injected whipple supercharged nitrous power beast.

There are some issues with some of the long ones and he has had some different ones on and should be able to point you in the right direction.

N1NCZ, he just got the Gibson Stainless I think...

Thats what I have heard, and is why I was just thinking a shorty header. Plus the shortys would be an easy install to do at the CT modding GTG on the 31st of July (y) That is of course if there is time and room to fit me in.

My Gibson's SS are due in today :D, and we will see on the actual install but I am not able to make the CT GTG II :6: -- Good luck with your install!

I got lucky and bought my ceramic coated TOG's used from Redshift for about the same price as a set of shorties. I paid someone to put them on because of the cutting/welding on the front of the catalytic converters. I debated doing it myself and then driving to the shop with the open headers but decided I didn't want to hassle with it. The headers have been on for at least a year now and there have been ZERO problems.

Shorty headers are good for 4-5 hp, mid-length or long-tube are good for 20-25 hp. If you are going to spend the money, it's definitely worth doing the mid-length or long-tubes.

JJ,

I have yet to see a 2002, 03, or 04 that has an airtube. I'm assuming that it is possibly a CARB deal, and for California cars only, at least that is what JBA thinks.

I would stick with JBA, you can get the 409 stainless set online for only about $479.00, that is what I run on my AV. Remember this when buying Gibson; they used to just put JBA headers in their box, and sell them as Gibson. They have merely tried to make a good copy of JBA. The original is almost always better, plus we have more defect replacements with Gibson for leaking welds, etc.

Hope this helps

I just put JBA shorties on my Av & couldn't be happier with the torque and drievability. I have no dyno access these days, but used to, and here's why I went with Shorties:

Last year had a 2000 GMC Sierra with FM 40 dual outlet 2.25 pipes, and intake. Buddy used to own a speed shop/dyno and I tried Dynatech long tubes & JBA shorties over several days (and a set of longish headers a bit shorter than the Dynas - don't remember the brand or results but they were not impressive so I have forgotten).

Tried to keep all things constant (temps, airflow, etc) and re-HPIII'd and drove a bit on each change for computer to re-learn).

shorties = best + 15 hp/20 tq (3 runs - tight #'s)
long tubes = best + 20 hp/12 tq (3 runs less consistent #s than the JBAs but very close)

LT installation was a b%^(h and they flat killed my torque. The addl HP was great at WOT but not noticeable during less spirited driving. The shorties gave me a nice kick at all RPM levels and driveability was SO much better than the LTs. Very linear power and more of it right where I drive all the time. On paper, HP increase was actually better with the JBAs at <3000 rpm, then the LTs took over. As I recall, the big jump with LTs came in around 4000.

Given the emissions issue (we have air testing here in CO) and obvious torque / driveability superiority, I kept the JBAs on my truck & sold the longs to a guy installing a procharger in his Silverado.

The Av mods are identical to my GMC set up, though the truck was lighter and had 4.10 gears, so was a bit peppier than the Av.

Bottom line, unless you are going with significant mods and want the big WOT HP, the shorties will actually deliver better performance in the real world of commuting and speed limited driving.
I understand my results may differ.

Hope this info helps!

I ended up going with the JBA's stainless steel, ceramic coated. They have been on for about 3 weeks now (y) They are awsome. Install took me about 4 hrs, but I'm no Mechanic I had to take my time  LOL

Yeah, but are shorty's worth installing, as far as power gain?

Ohhhh....look who's been lurking, how are those new sway bars?

Check out the dyno info on JBA's site.

Yeah, well, if I want smoke blown up my you-know-what, I'll go to a manufacturer's web site....I was asking for an opinion from THE MAN!

So?
