Hey everyone,

I bought an 09 Avalanche LTZ used.  The previous owner sprayed black spray paint on the rear cladding.  It looks good but I would like to redo it... I am not happy with how it sticks (or doesn't) to the plastic surfaces.

What do you think would be the safest way to remove this paint?  Its not adhered too well.  Masking take can pull it off with little effort.  I prefer some other all-encompassing method so that I can get it fixed professionally...or with Gatorback.

Also, if there a pictoral How-To where the procedure to REMOVE the rear cladding is shown?  I found some on here but the photo links seemed to be dead.

Thanks!!

Do you want to keep the rough texture of the cladding or would you prefer it smooth?
If you didn't want it rough you could consider sanding the cladding to get it to the bare plastic. Trick to get any paint like product to adhere to the cladding is preparation and using the correct product.
I had Gatorback applied to my 2004 AV as many first generation owners did but if you read through some of the old threads you will find that Gatorback is no different than any paint in that prep work was important and then you had to treat it like paint and be gentile with the surfaces to prevent scratches. It also came is different shades and those who tried o use a darker shade soon discovered that any scratch quickly showed up due to the lighter cladding underneath.
To save time and work many members just bought the EXT smooth cladding for a Cadillac and had it painted to match. Others didn't use a paint and just treated the cladding with Refinnish Restorer and applied it about once a year to refresh the look of the cladding. You can get that from a site member who gives a discount to members:

I looked at the cost of buying used EXT cladding... my hair turned white.

I'm afraid of pressure washing it off (though it may actually work).  I cannot guarantee that ENOUGH of the paint will release.  Short of some sort of abrasive material, water pressure may be the best solution.

Thank you for letting me know about Gatorback and its potential shortfalls. I hadn't thought of it showing through in scratches.

I really don't know WHAT to do.  I would like to remove it all and fix the slight over-spray that I can see under the plastic on my pure white paint.

Is there a How-To regarding removing the cladding SAFELY and without breaking them?

I think if I sanded it smooth I would go crazy over the waves I made in it...  I'm not sure.  I like it how it is. I just want something more permanent.

Go here and you will see a lot of options failed and successes.
just remember it is only as good as the prep.

Best mod I've ever done to my Avalanche...painted the cladding.
