It seems that my Kenwood system, amp, etc. is putting a strain on the electrical and I've already replaced the battery with a 1,000CCA Everstart.  It seems a new alternator is probably in order.  After doing a SEARCH here on alternators, it seems that upgrading to the 150amp model is pretty popular.  However, on eBay there are 275amp models available that seem quite reasonable.  I'm just wondering whether anyone has any experience with these?  And, is there anything else I should be looking at changing out while I'm at it.  Keep in mind that my Av is strictly an urban attack vehicle and will probably never see a muddy road, swamp, nor offroad terrain.  Aside for the stereo, small sub and amp, it is completely equipped with Audiovox headrest units and Gamecube for my boys.  Looking forward to your input.

if the 275 amp is from the  seller "alterstart" on ebay,i have one in my truck, puts out 190 amps at fast lidle (cold) 1000 rpm, dyno sheet that came with says 286 amps peak, tried to test at autozone and their tester started smoking after 260 amps(go figure AZ)

That's impressive..

I like the smoking tester part. >:D

Did you have to change your belt also?? Thanks!

I have found in the past that the Kenwood amps draw alot of power. I had to upgrade to a 250amp alternator in my Tahoe years back. Then i got rid of my Kenwood amps and i haven't had a problem since.

My stock Alt. was tested at 96 amps under load. I upgraded to a 235ampt Alt which tested 208 under full load.

I would highly recommend upgrading.

It would seem that the alternators listed above do not fit the '05 Avalanche.? One of the ads mentioned that it would NOT fit because it has a 4-pin regulator design.? However, I wouldn't have the first clue where to begin looking for this if it applies to my truck.

Unless they are referring to this...a two-pronged plug.

that's the plug they refer too, if it as only two pins (unplug it and look) you have an "improved" charging system and need a different alternator, mine is a 05' but i have the older charging system.? ? link to "new style" alternator :      http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/05-07-NEW-SUBURBAN-YUKON-XL-HI-OUTPUT-ALTERNATOR-300-A_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33573QQihZ003QQitemZ130059940647? ? ?

One thing I discovered was that the '05 and '06 use a two-wire regulator on the alternator, not the four.? None of the two-wire are being offered on eBay that I've found at those cheaper prices.

if you look at the ebay listing it says "make offer"? nothing to lose to try   and both ARE plug n' play, you don't even need a longer belt, the pulley is smaller to increase idle output.

here is another listing with opening bid of $299? ? ? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/05-07-NEW-H2-ESCALADE-DENALI-HI-OUTPUT-ALTERNATOR-300-A_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33573QQihZ003QQitemZ130074496185

You'd really have to take all of the accessories into account to know what's really necessary. LED's don't draw as much as halogens do, so it really depends. Some guys run dual alternators

I personally wouldn't trust any crazy third party alternator for the job. I'd stick to one or two name brand alternators. Especially when these older posts are claiming that they would run without a belt change. I'm not sure if they mean the pully is the same size, or simply are just running it with the tensioner stretched further. But there has to be some sort of change to the pully to reduce the resistance on the engine speed.

I still have my 250 amp in my AV, works great as long as you do the big 3 upgrade with 0 gauge OFÇ cable.
