ACTIVITIES
Take a scenic drive along US Highway 441 across the Appalachian Mountains and through the park. During the summer and fall anticpate heavy traffic. Be sure to stop at Newfound Gap on the Tennessee/North Carolina state line for wonderful views.
Take a hike on the Indian Creek Trail from the Deep Falls Campground to Indian Creek Falls.
Hike 8.6 miles round trip to Balsam High Top on the Balsam Mountain Trail.
From the Big Creek Campground hike 6.2 miles on the Baxter Creek Trail to the top of Mount Sterling and camp at the backcountry site.
From the Balsam Mountain Campground hike on the 2.6 mile Flat Creek Trail to Flat Creek Falls.
Go for an extended hike on the Applachian Trail that cuts across the park from east to west. Stay at a number of shelters along the ridges and enjoy incredible views.
Go fishing for trout in a countless number of streams throughout the park. A valid fishing license is required.
Take a guided horseback ride (rentals available) from Toe Spring, Chataloochee, or Big Creek. Bring your own horse and explore hundreds of miles of multi-use trails.
Permit required for staying overnight in the backcountry.
