Sorry to start another thread on exhaust, but I need help deciding what I want to go with. I have pretty much decided on the flowmaster 40 series muffler with the dual outlet. As far as the dual tailpipes are concerned, this is where I am undecided. Should I run them behind the rear wheels or (as the wife likes) straight out the back, making sure the spare is still accessable. So, to help me out, could some you folks that have done the dual exhaust conversion post some pics of the exits? I've seen numerous pics of the exhaust comming out behind the rear tires but not many of the straight rear exits. Any pics would be much apprieciated.

I have since changed back to a single out the side.

Can you tell me why you switched back?

OK, another ingrediant to the mix...I talked to another exhaust shop today and he suggested just running a Y-Pipe from the cat into duals, either 2.5 or 2.25 to the back and forgoing the muffler all together...hmmmm...too loud? I dunno?....Void warrenty??...I dunno?

Pls help. Should I consider this?
??? ???

From memory, I'm pretty sure my truck has dual cats. I'd think an exhaust shop that really knows how to set up an AV would already know that.

I would go out the sides behind the rear wheels. 1: It looks like it belongs there, (i.e. factory setup). 2: It keeps the exhaust from coming back into your truck if you have the midgate open. The duals straight out the back have a tendency to suck the air directly behind the truck into a vortex and pull it back into the truck. Out the sides cuts the exhaust regurg to a minimum. Plus I just think that the duals straight out the rear, just don't look right, with a cladded AV. It would look fine on a claddingless AV. The extra plastic on a cladding AV sticks down so far, that it makes it look strange, straight out the rear. The duals 45 degree or 60 degree out the rear behind the tires looks better IMHO My .02

IMO Would sound like a boat with above water exhaust
If thats the Sound You want I asy Go For It- However...With less back Pressure I am Sure You will have Driveability problems down the road .

Tubbyslanche, you've got to tell me why you describe yourself this way: "I Wear My Ass For A Hat !"

I would agree with your thoughts except... I've seen a picture of someone's AV here where they took the dual exhaust straight out the back that looked pretty good. They had it lined up so that the exhaust pipes came out just below the cladding about half way between the corner bumper step and the lower center section of the cladding. That kept it higher up off the ground, made less of an issue with ground clearance as the trailer hitch was lower, and still looked good in my opinion. Having them come out directly behind each tire is even better for ground clearance though.

But it still doesn't solve youre backpressure issue. You can always put one pipe back there that is just for show and not even hooked up to the exhaust. It's pretty cheesy if you know it's that way, but it's hard to tell unless you're somewhere really cold. I used to see a lot of them setup like that when I lived in Michigan.

Good luck whatever you do.

There's another issue/reason for not running the pipes straight out the back (which is a look I like a lot)...those of you with 4x4s who actually go offroad probably won't want to run pipes out the back - they will, at some time or another, get damaged. If you're unsure about this do a search on relocating the trailer/tow plug into the rear bumper. Many folks including me have bent or "removed" their trailer plug banging it on the ground when coming down a berm, etc.

About the expression, "wearing your ass for a hat" - you might not want to use that expression (for yourself at least). Think about it - sounds like one might have one's head up one's arse! :6:

Yes the AV does have DUAL CATS, however if you try running true duals you lose a LOT of back pressure and will notice it on takeoff and especily if you pull a trailer. I guess you could run 1 1/2" pipes all the way out to the back and put bigger tips on for looks, but I just went with a better muffler (more sound ;D) and kept the rest of the exhaust stock.

I went through the same thing just a few weeks ago with my new 2003, but I decided to go with the 50 series flow master, has a great sound when you get on it but is quite on a trip, 40 series would be to loud in my opinion. I had my OEM muffler cut out and the flow master put into place and had a chrome tip welded on for the look. Good luck with your decision.

One place that this might have come from is the movie CITY SLICKERS...Bruno Kirby is giving Billy Crystal a bit of a hard time over Billy's good night to the one good looking woman on the ranch. Billy, defensely as he is paranoid about appearing unfaithful to his wife, says to Bruno something to the effect that what he said to the woman was just a pleasant goodnight. Bruno says, somewhat accusingly, that..." No that was flirting...as if you are asking her...Can I wear your ass for a hat?"
Approximately.

Here's a picture like I was describing above with the dual exhaust out the back but set wider than the center cladding section on the bottom of the bumper. I think the one I saw before they were even wider yet, but this looks pretty good.

How do you suppose the dual exhausts AV owner keeps the fumes from rolling up into the bed, or worse yet, the cab if the midgate is open or window is down? These straight out pipes are great looking, and purrfect - but on an open bed pick-up. On the Av it tends to draw fumes upward and to the cab. Has this owner done something not visible to cure the problem?

Oh yeah, this is a thread about exhaust. Right.

UH OH

Is Shameless Posting contagious...or addictive?

FWIW, after lots of reading and asking questions I went with the JBA catback (comes with the magnaflow designed for the 5.3!) Even with SS with the money I saved I picked up an HPIII. >:D

My two cents,

Joe

Colonel,

There is nothing he CAN do to stop the exhaust from eventually seeping into the cab area with either the midgate down, or the rear window open.

On the upside, eventually he won't have troubles sleeping most nights after he has carbon monoxide poisoning.

Do you suffer from unexplained illnesses, Fatigue, Muscle pains , Upset stomach, Lethargy, Dizziness, Headaches? You eventually will.

No mater where you run the pipes out the back, it is simply a bad idea, no matter how "good" it looks. On a normal PU, its ok (as long as there isn't a rear slider. On an AV or an SUV (hatch leaks) with the rear window out? The midgate open? Homey don't think so.

Also, eventually (god forbid) if the seal on the midgate developes a leak, the exhaust will find it.

Oh, and there is this: Carbon monoxide poisoning is the number one cause of unintentional poisoning deaths in the World.

Muffman- Thanks- I have printed this response and am giving it to my brother- for whatever reason, then I cannot get blamed when he sucks up too much fumes. If it happens I hope he is at a Sonic so he doesn't take anybody with him. Your experience helps support my remarks as to stupidity of those pipes he installed straight outt the back and verify that is why he is smelling fumes. He won't listen to me - y'all know, family. Thanks.
