So here's the story. For some time now my parking brake didn't work very well. I have read all the posts related to the problem. I just figured it was a bad design from the start and I had to live with it.

Several weeks ago I noticed a strange burning smell coming from the right rear wheel. I figured the park brake was locked up. When the burning smell went away I thought all was OK. On ocassion the smell would reappear to a lesser extent and then go away.

Since we are going to pull our travel trailer next week I thought it might be a good idea to let the dealer have a look. I don't use the park brake much and I didn't want to pay alot to fix it. Well, it turns out I have a blown rear axle seal that has been leaking oil on the pads, hence the smoke and smell. ?

I'm really glad I took it in. I get a new seal and new brakes because the pads were contaminated.

So, if you smell something from your rear wheels, get it checked out!

I just sent him a post about that. I don't mind much if someone posts mindless drivel but when someone who does that gets in my face about the quality of one of my posts (which he did) then it's time to call BS. I also reminded him that he's probably the only one who cares how many posts he's put up.

Oh No....yet another thread run amok. ;D

Hey, don't worry AVid, I appreciated it. As a matter of fact, I am going to look at them today before we head of across the desert this weekend.

Thanks.

After my 60k mile checkup about a week ago they found a leak on the right front axle seal.

Got it fixed today.  Total was about $120.  My receipt says, 'Replaced Right Front Differential Output Shaft Seal'.

Glad I got this fixed before the big trip with the trailer.  I hate to have anything blown.

You got a better deal than I did as mine cost me $180.00. Most of it was labor and an $11.00 and some change part #12479012 :E:

Maybe my extended warranty kicked in?  I've got the same part number.

I know this is an old post but my 02 2500 with64k has the same axle leak.  Any recalls on this?  How much to fix it if I have dealer do it?

Thanks for your help. :help:

No recalls on this repair...Cost me $180.00 to get it fixed at the dealership, if you have an extended warranty it should cost less...
