Has anyone found a way to hook up a remote rec. for the HomeLink buttons to control aux driving lights ect. on the AV?
It would be nice to find a use for those darn things.
I know the after market for Street Rods have addressed this with other products.

I moved this here since there has been discussion on HOMELINK in this section and maybe people may offer some advice to help you...

Well the lights would have to have some type of signal reciever like tv's or garage doors. Homelink is just like the universal remotes you can buy in the store. I even programmed mine once to turn the tv on and off. I drove people crazy... ;D They had no idea what was going on while I secretly played with their heads... >:D

We've covered this in the past. Involves X10.

Try a search od the forum but make sure to change the "max. days" to something much higher than 7 days....

D2, I've used the homelink buttons to link to my home's automation, but from your question it looks like you want to use the buttons to control other things in your Av?

I was hoping to put some spot lights behind the grill, add a backup light and when Hitchcam finishes the AV cam add that. Each of these would be easy to turn on and off with a 3 channel rec. and latching relays. What could be easier! No wiring in the cab and no switches added to the dash. But I cannot find any rec. or relays that will work in mobil application. Being a Ham Radio Operator its time to Home Brew... :0:

I hope to add Homelink to my AV, didn't get it on mine cuz I didn't want the onstar Antenae thingy. I would also like to figure out how to do memory seats too.

D2, why don't you just disconnect the eletronics from the Homelink switches and wire them directly to some toggle modules. ?The Homelink switches should be momentary and could activate many different types of module. ?These modules should be available from any stereo shop that does alarms. ?For example, there are modules to toggle devices on or off, roll up/down windows, start the vehicle, or even control linear actuators.

Our Av didn't come with OnStar but did come with HomeLink. Perhaps you don't need one to have the other?

Neat idea, D2. The HomeLink buttons seem to work with many RF remote signals (X10, garage doors, security gates) that operate a relay. If you took the assembly and had the relay control DC instead of AC current, you may be able to do this -- this is probably what car alarms do when they're wired to flash the headlights, open windows and such.

For 2002, HomeLink comes with either the Convenience Package (which also includes OnStar, auto climate controls, and dimming outside mirror) or it comes with the power sunroof. In fact, if you have the sunroof, the price of the convenience package is lower since they don't make you pay for HomeLink twice. Don't know about '03 models.

X10 will work wirh HomeLink, but that's probably not the way to go here. X10 communications is closely coupled with the 110V AC power line. It would probably be possible to hack into a receiver and make it work with 12V DC, but if a person had the skills to do that, they would just do it and not post a question here.

I think the key here is to find an RF (not infrared) remote control system where the receiver runs on (or can be made compatible with) 12V DC. If that's the case, the receiver could be used to drive a relay, and the HomeLink could be programmed to take place of the transmitter.

I do recall reading about a setup for remote controlled driving lights. The lights were wired under the hood, and controlled by a receiver/relay combination. Then, a small RF transmitter was placed in the cab to control the lights. The idea was to use this when you didn't want to run wires through the firewall. Probably a small target market, but it sounds like it would be perfect for this application.

Here is one example (cheap), and here is another (probably not cheap.)

Don't know if HomeLink can be programmed for these, but it looks like it might be possible.

:0:The info from SS looks like it will work. I am going to get in touch with them and see what can be done. I will keep the thread informed and take pics when the install takes place.

Thanks

Well here is a copy of the email I got from one of the makers of remote control lighting. I asked him:
1. Does it come with a transmitter?
2.Will it work with HomeLink?
3.Can I activate multiple devices?
4.What is the current rating of the relay?

Hi Dick,

Thank you for your inquiry. According to what you have mentioned, our RDX-F11 kit will be suitable for your fog and driving lights and any other devices inside your Avalanche (nice ride)that you want to remote trigger to come On/Off.

To answer your questions:

1. The kit does come with a transmitter
2. It will not work with your Home Link transmitters in your vehicle because the RDX-F11 is a basic receiver that uses jumper setting to change the codes.
3. No, the transmitter only has two buttons and can be program to the receiver which has only one output.
4. I am not too clear on this question about the relay, but it is a regular 12volt with 4 prongs.

Should you have any questions, please let me know.

Again, thank you.

Best regards.

Well I am going to order a set and give it a try to program.

To be continued...

I would guess he's saying that the receiver cannot be programmed to match the HomeLink transmitter. I think he's missing the point that it's HomeLink that gets programmed to match the receiver, not the other way around!

Of course, it is possible that HomeLink can't be programmed for this transmitter, but I guess it's worth a try. (Easy for me to say since it's not my money!) >:D

True, this would most likely be the main risk. I've had a 50% success rate getting the HomeLink buttons to learn RF codes from other transmitters. :6:

D2, it might be worthwhile to see what their return policy is, just in case the HomeLink programming is the deal-breaker. Good luck & let us know how it works out (y)
