I have a Hunter ceiling fan in my room that has a RF remote control to turn the fan on and off and to turn the light on the fan on and off. I have been trying to get the homelink button in my AV to turn on the light but with no success. Has anyone done this before? If so, how did you get it to work?

I also have tons of X10 devices and would like to control them. Say I pull up to my house and hit one of the homelink buttons and my front porch light comes on and living room light comes on. Anyone done this before with X10 devices?

Hey Darkeye,

I haven't tried programming the other two buttons on the Homelink yet, but it's on my list. We have all kinds of X10 devices around here performing various tasks. I was planning to program some of the exterior lights for the house.
I just assumed that you could program the Homelink with an X10 remote just like you would use your garage remote for programming. I'll plan to take a look at it this week.

In case you were wondering... you cannot use X10 devices on a 12V circuit. I have already looked into it, and evidently 12V is typically too noisy to be reliable. I had all sorts of silly ideas swimming around in my head that I was planning to implement in the AV untill someone more knowledgeable than myself rained on my electronic parade.

Ah, I understand. You want Homelink to output the RF to turn on the light on the fan. Have you tried programming Homlink using the garage door openner directions but with the Hunter RF remote instead? Worth a try, but I think they are on different frequencies.

I tried the same thing with my ceiling fan remote and the "homelink" remote buttons on the overhead console on my Acura CL and couldn't get it to work either. I think more because the of fan remote. When you depress & hold the light button it dims the light and doesn't just shut it off. I don't think the homelink knows what it is supposed to be doing and thus fails to program.

You got it Bruce. Yes, I have tried it with the Hunter RF remote but can't get it to work. I need to find my fan manual to see what frequency range it is in. It's probably outside the frequency range that homelink transmits.

Just to let everyone know that it does work. My Avalanche is now programmed to turn on the back door light when I hit the middle homelink button. Couple of notes that I found:

1) Erase existing homelink memory by pressing outer 2 buttons until light turns off (note, it will stay lit, then blink fast, then turn off. takes about 30 seconds)

2) Set your remote for the right house code. press and hold the homelink button you want to program until it starts blinking quickly. Keep holding the button down and press the button on your remote that you want programmed. It's very finicky, so if it doesn't program, release and repress the x10 remote button a few times. It will eventually work.

3) let go of the homelink. You're done! Note that the distance isn't great. I had to reposition my receiver to an outlet that was physically closer to the garage. I am maybe getting 20 feet distance.

4) contrary to homelink.com, the house and unit code can be anything (they say it has to be A-1). A-1 seems to be the easiest to program, but the other codes will program as well.

That's it! ;D Any questions, let me know

Ooops, I forgot to add that after the X10 has been programmed, you can now program your garage remote normally. Do the X10 first though.

The programming depends on the X10 remote you use. Fortunately, I had several different ones -- it didn't work until I used a PalmPad. Here's another thread regarding this. It has a link that includes the steps (similar to the ones above), and some pictures:

I have got my home link turning on all my outside lights on the house. What I did was took apart a old garage door opener and used the circuit board. I mounted it in a control panel and ran a wire from the light switch in the house to the circuit board. In order to get it to work I had to extend the receiving antena on the circuit board by about 3 feet. Im not to familiar with the X10 but if there is some kind of antena look in to it. I think I need to look into the X10 for more ideas

Including a module with an antenna, x10.com is having a special for $40 on everything you'd need if you're interesting in dabbling in a little home automation:

X10 special

The "Firecracker" interface this kit comes with could plug into your PC, but this is optional if you just want to control a light from your AV. The PalmPad remote that this kit comes with is the same one I was able to use to program HomeLink.

seabass - it sure is

Just program the remote like you would any garage remote

Works great - I have done it for years now

Yes, the palmpads are the best to use, others stop x-mitting after a few seconds, but I HAVE gotten them to work. It's a battle of pressing the buttons long enough and stuff. I normally find a palm pad and use that if I can. X10 is great stuff.
