How Bad Would 113k scare you on a 2013?

I had a 2002, 2004 & 2006 Avalanche and LOVED them. After the 2006 wore out I said I wouldn’t buy a non cladded one. Well..... after driving regular trucks for the last 12 years it’s all I can do to get back into another one.

Obviously I can only go back to 2013 and I found one with 113k on the clock and it “looks” to be in excellent condition. I used to put major miles on a vehicle but I moved my office closer to home and went from 3 to 1 office. Now I only average 10,400 miles/year.

Would that high mileage deter you?

Quick answer, no. What would scare me though, how has the truck been maintained? Do some digging, bring it to a GOOD mechanic to have a thorough going over.

You can get some more info by reading this thread:

There are other variables to consider too such as were those miles from one owner? Has there been many owners over a short time or was the vehicle in a flood etc. And of course was routine maintenance done?
If you look around this website you will find many "high mileage clubs" where owners have hundreds of thousands of miles on their AVs.

I put over 100k on all three of mine but I would trade more often back then because I drove so much. It’s taken me 12 years to put 195,700 on my current truck. I own a CPA firm and we just don’t go to the office and meet every client like we used to. This trend started about 2014 and just fine with me. LOL!

I know there’s been two owners, both in TN so no rust - but I don’t know who they are to ask questions or how I’d go about how it’s been maintained. Out of seven years looks like the first guy owned it 3 years and second 4.

Anything trucky in my area is flying off the shelf, which makes it rough to research too much.

I have an excellent mechanic that’s a client, I’m gonna see if he can go thru it and if the dealership will let me. If they won’t that will be a strike against them. However most lots around here have the attitude right now that if I don’t buy it someone else will in 15 minutes.

In February of this year, I bought a 2003 Z-66 with 242K miles on it.

Back in 2012, I bought my 2004 EXT with 116K miles on it.

I still have both trucks and they are closing in on a quarter million miles each.

Full disclosure, the EXT is waiting on a new engine because of a hairline crack in the driver's side head.

Both trucks are otherwise in great shape.

Now, what was your question, again?

:)

You seem to have better luck than me! LOL

If me and the dealer could work out a 2/24 or 3/36 ext warranty at a reasonable price I believe this will be a no brainer.

Theres so much about the Av that spoiled me. First off I’ve NEVER found a bed cover as waterproof, secure yet not a pain to deal with if you needed to remove it. The length of the bed with the mid gate down and those lockable bed boxes. Plus they just ride well. The wife and I with both kids went from TN to Disney in FL and we took the Av instead of her three row seating SUV when I had my ‘06 because it had plenty of room and rode so well.

I traded a 1999 Suburban with 230K miles on it for the EXT.

I had purchased that Suburban with only 30K miles on it

I traded in a 1984 Trans Am with 210K miles on it on the Suburban.

I take good care of them and they last me a long time.

I tend to drive them until they are practically worthless, so I am never concerned about trade-in value.

I get my money's worth.

Bought my 2012 with 100K back in July. It needed some TLC, but the engine bay was extremely clean. Carfax indicated proper dealer maintenance even after the initial warranty was over.

That’s reassuring, did you opt for an ext warranty?

I assume that issue with bad heads that were cracking was remedied by 2013?

I purchased my 2002 North Face Avalanche with 22k miles on it after it had been turned in off of a lease. I replaced the transmission at 160k miles with an OEM transmission. The engine began leaking about a quart of oil every 2 months at almost 300k miles but was still running well. I replaced the factory engine with a Jasper engine at 307k miles. It is still running well with the original paint job and cladding. Now, I have taken good care of her,(oil changes every 4k miles, fluids, plugs, wires, tires, and shocks changed on better than average time-frames) but I've also treated her pretty rough in woodland and urban environments on most days!
I would not think twice about buying another one with 113k miles on it as long as it was not from the north (salt on roads) or the beaches. That is the only items that seem to destroy trucks these days.

Yes, bought an extended powertrain warranty, never bought a vehicle with that many miles.

Engine purrs, but was concerned more about trans.

I haven't bought an extended warranty in close to thirty years.

I wasted my money on that one and never fell for that again.

If things break, I pay cash for the repair or fix it myself, when possible.

The cracked head on my EXT's engine was a rare event for those engines.

Stuff happens.

If I had caught the cracked head a year earlier, it would have been a simple matter of having a couple of new heads installed and off I would go.

But, the coolant contaminated oil had circulated in that engine for far too long for my comfort level.

My trucks may be old, but I am determined to do what I can to keep them running and dependable for as long as possible.

So, I'm opting for a reman engine with a 3 year, 100 mile nationwide parts and labor warranty.

At the rate I currently drive, I will run out of time long before I run out of miles.

There were other years in the first generation Avalanches that had heads that were more prone to cracking that the heads on my EXT.

I figured with 236K miles before mine went bad, I had a good run.

I really haven't heard too many people talk about cracked heads in the second generation engines.

But, anything is possible, I suppose.

If I can get at least as many miles on the reman engine I will be having installed, I will consider myself good.

Well I bought the Avalanche. Somehow I missed that the dash was cracked in two spots, my fault for inspecting while it was getting dark and the CEL came on on the way home. It was code P015B the oxygen sensor.

Thank goodness I got the ext warranty!

Well, good luck with it. I've been driving Trucks and SUV's for years, and I still can't believe how nice this thing rides...
