I know how to take them off but it seems so impractical and cluncky to handle.

What is your technique?

mine is as GM has written...unlock lift and move.....

Not that big of a deal....
Theree are some threads about storing in bag and garage that may interest you...

If I'm wanting them out of the way and safely stored, I do this

I take 'em off and slide the rear two under my lifted EZ-Slider. If whatever I'm carrying requires me to remove the one near the midgate as well I either store it inside the bed with the cargo, or behind the back seats.

Danlwil has the picture is worth a thousand words. Those glow in the dark hanldes inside and attached to the individual panels are pulled toward you and each section lifts out independently toward you [they are numbered on top so you cannot make an error re-installing]. You have a bag for storage. The key is PROPER 45 degree angle re-installation [which works smoothly and easily] as this is engineered / designed to prevent water leakage. I once failed to follow that procedure and ended up with water in the bed. Just remember NOT to FORCE the brackets as they work easily when in the right position to lock [push] back into lock.
