How Much Would This Cost To Fix

3 weekends ago (saturday) my dad was driving in a parking lot and ran into some frozen snow that was piled up, it dented the front bumper on the drivers side and broke the DTRL/fog light bracket in several spots. The bad thing is, he died the next morning (sunday) and now my mom and I need to sell the truck, but I need to get the damage fixed first.

I was able to pop the bumper back out pretty good with a scissor jack (from my Honda) but there is still about a 3 inch diameter indent on the side. On top of this I can't get the light housing to sit back in the bumper as well as it should, and I'm thinking that the plastic was stressed enough that it didn't return to normal.

How much do you estimate it will cost for a new bumper, and a new DTRL/foglight bracket (or complete housing)

Sorry for all the text

Dude:

Really sorry to hear about your Father...
I went through that recently, and it is very difficult.
Wish there was something I could say.

About the AV, it is tough to say without knowing exactly what components are damaged... swing by any body shop - they can give you an idea. And even if you want to do the work yourself, you can usually get them to give you a written estimate with the parts list, so you will know exactly what to buy!

Seven

Dude,
I'm very sorry to hear about your loss. I don't know how much help I can be, but I do have some information. According to one book that I have, if it's just the DTRL/Fog assembly, that part cost $92.50 and will take 0.3 hours to install (the install will also be covered if you have to replace the front bumper cover as well. The front bumper cover might be able to be "adjusted" with a little heat. I had a small 2 in "dent/scar" in mine, and some careful heating (with a handheld propane torch) made it almost unnoticable. If you have to take it to the body shop, the estimate is around 1.6 hours to remove & install a new cover and the cost is right around $356. If the impact bar is also damaged (under the bumper cover), then you can move the hourly charge to 2.0 hrs of labor and another $361 for the part. Of course prices change, and the hourly labor will depend on the shop. Good Luck,

dude, can you sell the honda, and keep the av? the av is part of your family too, and a positive memory!

Trust me I'd love to keep the avalanche, its so nice to drive and I love to have the space of a pick up. But its not possible with the payments on it (we purchased it but are still paying for it) and what I make a month. The Honda is paid for, and I'm working on it for mobile audio/security competition. I've tried talking my mom into keeping it, but she can't get out of the lease on her new car so she's stuck with that.

I'm very sorry for your loss Dude.

One thing you could try is slipping the dent passed the dealer. I know it's a different situation, but I know of quite a few cases when friends and my father have turned in leased vehicles with slight exterior damage that the dealers failed to notice.

When I traded in my last vehicle they failed to notice that the whole trunk had been used as a woofer enclosure housing 6 subs. All the carpeting was tore up, and there was spray foam all over. I also had a big scratch along the bumber, and they stereo didn't work.
It just depends how close they inspect.

My heart goes out to you. Losing an AV wwould be bad enough, much less losing your Father.

I would check out some private bump shops. Often they will repair it for less than the dealer and you're going to give it up anyway.

I had some similar damage in October. Here is what I can tell you:

The bumper cover was $437.29 and 1.7 hours to replace.
The impact bar was $303.05 and 1.3 hours to replace.
My fog light assembly was reinstalled at 0.3 hours labor.

I hope this helps some. These were just some of the repairs I had done at the time. I had my repairs done at a dealership bodyshop as the "offender's" insurance was paying to fix it. Your estimate and cost may vary.

Good luck in whatever you decide.

Dude, so sorry to hear about your Dad. WVBubba had to have his front cladding and lamp assembly replaced after an unexpected Dog Mod...not recommended. The bill was just under $800. That was with GM Parts and install. Did your Dad not carry insurance on the truck? I would think this would be covered. Best of luck and Blessings to you and your Mom.

Mrs Bubba :B:

Thanks for everyone's help. We do have insurance, and might be pursing that but there was something about the fact that the truck was in his name and he had to file the claim or some nonsense.

But I'm trying to take over payments on the truck from my mom now, she's a little apprehensive about an 18 year old having a new truck, but I can come up with the remaining money by selling my car and money from SS till I'm out of high school.

Does it sound stupid for an 18 year old to be getting a truck like this, considering the circumstances?

Dude,

As long as your responsible with your truck I don't think age should be an issue.

I'll add my condolences to you and your family at your father's death.

Dude . . a sitiation like this tends to make one 'grow up' quicker than normal. While I didn't suffer the loss of a parent, my Mom was very seriously injured when I was just a bit older than you. I had to pick up a number of family responsibilities for about a year - that did a lot for my maturity.

As long as keeping the Av doesn't mean working so much that you can't finish up high school with your best effort, I'd say go for it! We wish you the best.

heres some pictures of the damage.

Crack in crevice, it's about 3/4" long. Needs more light for picture

The bumper. I left the light housing up against the inner bumper, and drove to work, it seems to have popped the dimple out a bit by heating maybe????
