How To Relocate Trailer Plug Into Bumper

Well its been a couple months and the lockpick has failed me again. There are two camera turn on leads on the lockpick. Both are tied direct to ACC. So they go high as soon as the truck starts.

I think it's back to a video switch as the only option. (short of a new alpine 9" head unit)

Took my 05 z71 avalanche offroading and fell into a rut... tried to back out of it and ended up crushing my bowtie decal mounted on my hitch. I also relocated my trailer plug real good.... ripped the mount for the plug right out from the welds lol.. I decided to weld it back on simply because I had the hardware but now I wish I would have done this to avoid the problem in the future.

Works great on my '07. Relocated plug to the bumper and upgraded the hitch. Thanks for the info here guys.  (y)

To bring the thread to life. The common concern seems to be the exposed spring of the cover hinge rusting. Has anyone seen these?
A Hopkins 40950? I'm afraid I can't add pictures yet due to being a fairly new member.

I have not seen any problem with mine which I installed many years ago.

Considering doing something like that to mine but I am looking to get an aftermarket bumper installed and will need to redo everything anyhow so not sure how far I want to go with mine. Looks great though.

Not sure I like the fact that this modification appears to be a unit that connects to the old plug and not a total rewiring of it. But will likely end up with some variant of this in whatever bumper setup I end up with.

The rewiring would be nice. But I believe the MOD is more to correct a poor location of the OEM plug by the General and to improve functionality by having both the RV and 4 pin plug-ins. Using the stock wiring with a coating of dielectric grease just eases the install. (y)

Still on my list of mods to do.  Been over 4 years, so I think it will probably stay on it, useful as it would be

The adapter plug fits the oem harness perfect, so no reason not to like it. The plug that mounts to your stock hitch is just an adapter to plug into the OEM harness too, so no different than stock as far as the wiring goes.

Great suggestion to check out the Hopkins plug. I haul a boat with my Av, and the trailer has surge brakes on it. So an even better Hopkins kit is the model 48470 which has the 7 round & 5 flat connectors. And go figure, their on clearance at Walmart for under $12. https://www.walmart.com/ip/26962029

I'll post a review & a few pics of mine when it's done.

Well, it worked out really well. The Hopkins plug is still available at Walmart, but not at that price any more. I drilled a hole using a holesaw in the bumper to the left of the license plate & installed it. Easy as pie. And works great. Really nice to not have to use adapters on the trailer lights.

I’m brand new to this forum, and I know this is an older post. Just thought I’d share a quick pic of my relocate on my 2500. I had the old wore-out factory hitch replace with a 16,000# Curt that tucks up nicely under the bumper and relocated the plug.

Nice. I bought one to relocate but have been too chickens&^% to drill the required hole to relocate it.
