i was embarking on the adventure of dropping the oil pan of my 02 5.3 4x4 , i was wrestling with taking the starter out , there was a lot of cussing and a lot of shoving parts around when out of nowhere there were a lot of sparks coming from the starter or what i guess was the starter. I completely forgot to disconnect the battery because who thinks of the battery when dealing with an oil issue. Now, i have absolutely 0 electrical, when i turn the key it's just dead, nothing. I went to disconnect the battery and i noticed it was extremely hot. Is my truck completely dead or could just hopefully just be a fuse that popped? where would i even begin to start to look? Dealing with a low oil pressure issue with my pan dropped as well as differential , what a lovely day!

COuld be starter and/or alternator fried, fusible links, battery and/or other wire burnt thru insulation.

battery is still at 12 v .
As for the starter, i'll have to take it in to test it when i go to get a oil pan gasket, if it were just the starter, i'd still have at least lights and whatnot in the truck , right? it just wouldn't turn over.

i'm doing a test with one of the test lights where you hook the negative post up to the battery and the test light alligator clip to the battery wire then touch the point of the test light to the positive post, what it said online is if you had a short it would stay lit and you can pull fuses until the light goes out and that's your short. I wasn't able to find this yet. I tested all of the relays under the hood and they all seem to be working correctly. I haven't pulled all of the smaller fuses but the bigger ones like the 30's and 50's all seem to be intact .
I know for sure i fried my starter , it's dead, could i have shorted out my battery cables, is that a thing that can happen?

May get you started their is a lot more. You Tub is your friend.

Even though I have pulled starters out since I was 14 (62) I always get the book (Haynes) and follow the procedures given there. We all know they tell you to disconnect the battery before you do anything and most times it's just the publisher covering his ass; you really don't need to disconnect the battery to say, change your plugs but the starter is a different critter. I bet you'll never fool with taking out the starter without first disconnecting the battery first hence forth... Tough lesson to learn, I know, I had to learn it several times myself!
