Is it safe to assume the two bolts I removed don't do anything else? I couldn't see anything else they would be holding togther.

You are correct 
. One long bolt and nut in the horizontal position and one vertical bolt to the "tail" of the hook. That's all they do .

The horizontal bolts are also used to hold the Waag brush guard in place.CA-AV said:

Yeah you wll be fine, I removed mine when I lowered my truck, It gives an SS style scoup look to it. On my last cruise you can really see the diference beween the openings. I was thinking about cutting the plastic and adding a real SS scoup now that different size opennings are being made from chevy.

Thanks everyone. Just needed a sanity check. The opening is much more noticeable now, so I'm thinking about something to do with it. Probably either lights, or "SS" type scoops.
i would like to take the hooks out and if possible add another set of factory looking fog/driving lights.

I was just thinking the same thing the other day. My Waag front runner attaches there but I think without the tow hooks a set of rectangular lights will fit.
If anyone out there is getting rid of their two hooks I'd be interested in the bolts. I need them to put tow hooks back on - don't ask...
