I Think I Found The PERFECT Subwoofer Location II

I thunk again >:D

I was looking at pics at the rear letters of the avy and noticed the rear window.....

How about a creative mind designing a sub enclosure that fits in place of the rear window......Could be made clear so you can look through the center for viewing backwards and have a woofer on each side....the depth could go outside over the bed.....Use quick disconnects for those times you wanna remove window and lay box on bed then and re hook up....

Crazy huh >:D

That's actually a pretty cool idea. Order an extra, non-defrosting window from GM or find a wrecked Av (God forbid) at a salvage yard. Remove the glass from the frame and replace with Plexi-glass/Lexan and your all your sub stuff. Your OEM window could stay in the midgate pocket until needed.

Nice addition, I'd say.

I would think that reducing the view out the rear window cound result in some safety issues. Also, would law enforcement have a problem with such a mod?

Viewable rear window is not required by law. But Side mirrors are if you can use the rear window. Many panel vans have no rear window...

That idea is possible, but I dont think many people would want to do it. You still have to problem of where to stow it when your AV wants to be a truck... It would be nice for show though!!

Lighting, I might have missed it somewhere in the middle of all those threads but can you put your midgate down? From the picture it looks like you lose that capability. Or is the box mounted on the midgate? If so then you are losing the storage area. I hauled a frig in mine the first week I had it and can't see that being done with that setup. ORV :B:

Orv,
The midgate does not fold in my setup, however the box in removable. It is mounted on the midgate, made of molded fiberglass. Let me know if you have any other questions. :B:

Not crazy ... it's already being done.

OMG... Goo you have everything bookmarked! A couple things come to mind looking at this custom offering:

-It can stop a .38 caliber bullet? Is this a problem for many of us?
-If it wasn't for the way the box protrudes from the rear, this might be an option. Not sure how it work with our AV. window & midgate functionality are lost?

and finally, anybody else noticed the neon?

;D

Face it Goo is the encyclopedia Britanica of the Club.... the man is a genius and can BAKE as well

I think we have finally defined "taking a walk on the wild side" >:D

I can't see most cars behind me as it is. Hell, I've already backed into one car because I couldn't see it from left, right, OR rear. (Stupid little Honda :8: )

Best Buy has 10" and 12" subs on sale right now. Really wish I could get these in somehow without losing the mid-gate. I think I'll drive down to Oak Cliff this week and see if I can find someone to alleviate this problem.

Let us know if you find a solution. I am still waiting for my prototype that will be something similar to what lighting did. You can search for his post and check his pictures.

Good Luck!

I finished up my "rear console" sub enclosure this weekend. Measurements are 13" across (door to door), 12" deep (console to rear bench), by 17" high. You can do either a 10" or 12" in this location, and have it "fire" toward a couple directions.

I choose to have mine fire upwards.

I still have to cover the box though...
Any tips on how to get good corners. Do I need to make cuts and overlap the material? How no they normally cover enclosures. I don't see any overlapping on those ones. ???

What type of material are you using to cover the box with

I don't know exactly. ?I got it from a local fabric store. ?It's pretty thin, no backing, similar to a hanes undershirt ???

Any pictures of the finish product?

I'll take some pics this week of before & after the enclosure is carpeted, and then the final layout of the back. So hopefully by next week will have more pics on my site.

I have been watching this thread with great interest ever since I bought my AV as I am like most of the group - I want a functional truck and I want Bass....

So I have decided to take things into my own hands and am making a box that will hold a solobaric 8 in the center console, that will not destroy the box use, and will hopefully pound like I expect it to.

The solobaric 8 should hit hard for as small of a cabin as we have, but I need to verify that first. The design is a basic one that allows you to keep the rear a/c vents, allows you to keep the console, and allows you to store some small things in there. Trick is keeping the truck looking stock and keeping the trucks functionality. I think I can do both with a great sounding solution.

Started on the prototype in Visio last night and hope to have a prototype box within a month.

Thye JL Audio box forces you to disconnect the rear A/C vents and makes it so that you would have to leave the box with the truck if/when you sell it as you have to butcher up the console. I hope to be able to avoid this.

If my design is a functioning one, I will offer the plans to the club and maybe sell a box or two to those that do not want to build it themselves - if there is any interest.

Opinions, reactions, comments, complaints?

Good luck Perpendicular!!

Solobarics are awesome woofers. One thing you may want to watch out for is vibration/resonance from the componenets of the center console since you won't be removing them. It gets real annoying when you hear rattling along with your bass.
I had to deal a lot with those types of issues when I was competing in SPL.
3m makes a thick (padded-like) double sided tape, that works great between objects that rub or vibrate.

Thanks Zimms!

I remember those days - but forgot about the double sided tape 'remedy' :)

Wow, it has been a long time since I competed in any SPL contests. I remember when I put 4 18's in the back of an S-10 ext cab. No back window as the box was THAT big. But the dirt would literally fall off the bottom of the truck from the vibration.

Women always wanted to ride with me for some reason......

That is soo true! They would always fight about who got to sit in the back-seat. ;D
I solved the problem though... Ripped out the back and put in a wall >:D >:D

I think I am going to start to experiment again. A long time ago I posted an idea that we dropped and now I think I am going to start on that project.

Here it is again. Go to GM and purchase a bag that holds the 3 panels for the AV bed cover. Now build a box that will fit tightly in that bag and mount it to the opposite side your other bag mounts to.

Im thinking 6 Eight inch subs, 3 per channel. Split the box down the middle and have 2 removeable port tubes come through the midgate.

Viola, fully functional midgate and you still have room to carry stuff, It is hidden so it still looks stock, and 6 Eight inch subs should thump. Now we may have to cut it back to 4 subs due to enclosure size but I think since bass in omni-directional, it should sound good. My 2 10" subs in the back sound OK without ports.

Tell me your thoughts and as soon as I get the money I will start the project. I won't cut the holes out of the midgate untill I hear the box first though. IM NOT THAT STUPID...hehe ;)

Good Luck Wiki! Keep us posted.

I am still WAITING for my enclosure. Hopefully it will be today and as soon as I get it hook it up, I will post pictures and review. ;D

Not a bad idea, but I want the subs inside the cab with me so I can hear it without it sounding muffled, and I wont cut holes in my midgate...

I like the idea though, it would good for any outdoor activities!!
