Idea: Snap-In Power Rear Window?

I've got an idea for a new product for the Av. How about a rear window with a built-in power slider that you can snap-in for the warmer months? I never use my rear defrost in the summer and I am constantly removing the rear window for more air. Perhaps someone could develop a new rear window without defrost and with a power slider that is powered from the rear defrost button? One window for warm months, one for cold. :0: ;D

One drawback is that the rear defrost is either off or on--not a three way switch. My thought is you could just have the power slider move from closed to open to closed when power is applied. The driver just stops the window where they choose.

Of course, I could just get really ambitious and build my own. Perhaps start a little business!! ;)

I have always thought that one day we will see a power window in the midgate as an option some day. Just you wait and see.

I'm sure the power window will be on the next Generation Avalanche. First they have to decide wich one to stay with, the Cladded AV, or the Classless, er Claddless one! :B:

I definately agree with you guys on this one. I'm sure they'll look into this. I previously had a Toyota 4Runner and those have a sliding rear window. If chevy could take a little from Toyota on this one, I believe it would definately add to the amount of time it would take to change and add to the convenience for us AV owners. Great discussion guys. Thanks

I think we might see a power midgate in a Caddy first. There has been power rear windows in other cars like Honda Del Sol and an old Mercury (not sure of make or year) Lets hope for the Av Next. My $.02

Think about what you're asking for before you ask for it. If you have a power midgate glass and the midgate is down you will lose your ability to have a closed vehicle. For the Av owners in the warm climate all year around it won't be so bad but, for us in the Northeast that have four seasons I like the idea of a using the midgate in the down position with the glass in place. Just my $.02...

The first car my father bought after I was born had a power rear window. It was a Ford Meteor(spl), and I believe it was a 62 or 63..

I'm thinking of a completely self enclosed "snap-in" window with a panel that slides to open. Perhaps this could be powered by the defrost wires. I would not be interested in a window that slides into the mid-gate. Too many complications with that, as mentioned above....

Z, I like your idea -- power from the defroster contacts, slide a panel from side to side. Kind of like the sliding back glass on other pickups.

How about using the defroster switch to power the thing -- hit the defroster, the window slides open. Hit it again, it closes.

Where do you put the motor, so that it does not interfere with the back passengers? Inside the cabin, or outside?

-k.

This is a great idea . . . you should have patented it before disclosing your genius! I'd buy one. I've only pulled the rear window out a couple of times because it's a bit of a pain to do. . . . but with your idea, it's a push of a button away from a bit of fresh air! I like it!

I guess there's always a simpler / cheaper manual sliding window approach, but I like the powered way of thinking. That way you can do it on the road from the driver's seat whenever the urge hits . . .

Are you looking for venture capitalists . . . ;D

Hopefully someone with some design and manufacturing facilities will think it's a great idea as well! I want one! :)

GMC is coming out with a truck that is built like an Envoy with a sliding rear roof and side that converts into an Avalanche type of truck. It has a power midgate window.

Let's think about this a minute....if you power the midgate, you might or might not have to power the window, and the rear seat bottoms and rear seat backs, and, for those tall people that have the front seat slid back so their legs will fit under the dash, you'll have to slide the front seat forward to accomdate the rear headrest so the rear seat will fit flush and so on and so on. Six or seven different functions, different motors, different things to go wrong. Mash just one kid in all those things flopping back and forth and your per-unit costs just went through the roof.

Naw, the manual midgate works for me.

While we're on the subject, I've wondered if anybody thinks a 60/40 SPLIT midgate is a good idea. I was just thinking about those trips to Home depot where you're buying 8-foot 2x4's but taking the kids with you. If you could only pop down 40% of the midgate, you'd still have two seats in the back, kind of like the Envoys and other SUVs have.

My dad had a 1956 Chrysler station wagon with a power rear window. They are definitely convenient

The General is having so much trouble with the sliders leaking, you hardly see them on his trucks anymore.

About 1958 Mercury made the Turnpike Cruiser which had a reverse slanting back window. The center section was powered to lower and raise. Living in Central NY (fairly close to Canada), and being a car nut, in the 50's was pretty interesting. The Canadian Ford was called a Meteor. This of course was before Mercury started using the name on a separate Model. Slightly different grille and tail lights. Dodge and Plymouth used the same names as US but they flip-flopped grilles and headlights. Dodge used the US Plymouth grille and tails and vice versa for Plymouth.
Just noticed...no longer a "Newbie"! (y)
