I'm 12 Hours Away From Owning A AVALANCHE

Great forum. I'm damned impressed with the loyal support for the vehicle. I'm moving on from owning a Land Rover Discovery, which also had a very loyal fan following. To be honest, I'm suprised with my choice. I had no intention of an AVALANCHE and figured a 1500 crew cab was my vehicle of choice. Once the salesman showed me the versatility, it was a no brainer. I have a couple of ???'s.

1. I tow a small drift boat for fly fishing. Is it easy enough to see a smaller trailer when backing up? Do you find the need to remove the cover and drop the tailgate for high visibility backing at boat ramps? I don't see this as a huge issue, but wanted to ask.

2. Is the whole hard cover with lock pretty secure? IE, can I store my fishing gear with pretty good confidence?

3. Have the fixed the leaking window issue yet?

4. Should I ask the dealer for any special prep before I drive home with the vehicle?

5. Anything else I should know????

This is one cool vehicle and this group is one slick crowd....

I have found my Av to be great for flyfishing trips. Plenty of room for gear and I can sleep in the back. Your gear will be safer in the back of the Av just for being out of site. No vehicle is secure though from someone that wants in bad enough . Someone on this site recommended a small flag temporarily on the trailer for backing. I haven't trailered with mine yet. Where do you fish? I like to head to Montana when I can string together a few days.

Welcome to the club, signup so we know who you are.

If you get the roofrack, check for filings above the doors in the big rubber gasket.

Enjoy it!!! ;D

I logged in with a user name, rather than using Guest! I guess I better go ahead with the deal tomorrow! : :) I live in Montana, so we will need to get together!

Every time I think about this purchasing this vehicle, I just kind of laugh. I never expected it to take me by suprise. I'm still a bit aprehensive, but nothing can be more troublesome than my Land Rover....

Buy it and don't look back! It is a great vehicle. Is that Rock as in Rock Creek? I am in Seattle. I can make it to Missoula in 7 hours if I miss rush hour in Seattle and Spokane. The Av's tank is big enough and the seats are comfortable enough that I drive straight through (if I haven't had too much coffee).I usually hit the Bitterroot first. My dad was born and raised in Stevensville so it kid of feels like home! Than it's off to Rock Creek via Skalkaho. Man do I love Montana!

Hey RockTrout:

Leaking is not a wide spread problem. Many of us have leak free Avalanches. Your best bet is before you sign the papers take your Av to a you do it car wash. Fold down the back seats (as if you're going to drop the midgate) and then spray down the truck. Blast the back window, along the grates for the drains and inside the fender wells (real important to get inside the fender wells). Understand that if you put that nozzle right on the seal - ya it's going to leak so be realistic.

Check for and drips or water on the carpet. No water - no leaks - done. Drips, or damp - problem - but you haven't signed papers yet so you can make them fix it BEFORE you take final delivery.

Other thing to do is already suggested - if you have the roof rack open the doors and roll the weather stripping back between the roof and the door seal. Your checking for rust. If there is rust the dealer installed the roof rack wrong (they brushed the metal shavings aside instead of cleaning it). Insist they clean it before accepting delivery.

If you have OnStar make sure the antenna is on your Av. This has been a minor issue on early builds. The OnStar antenna is located driver side toward the front and is about five inches tall.

Backing up with a small trailer is a bit of an issue. Taking the covers off will help as will a flag on the trailer.

The back cargo covers are secure. The only way they are coming off is breaking the lock on the tailgate. Not impossible, probably relatively easy actually however the same goes for any other lock - if they want in, they'll get in - but it is more secure than an ordinary tailgate with a soft cover or even a one piece hydraulic. There is no way those covers are coming off with the tailgate closed.

Good luck - let us know how it goes!

Hey RockTrout,

Welcome to the AV Club. You will find it is a wonderful resource and a bunch of great guys. You will find the Club gun-friendly and fishing-friendly, so don't be afraid to voice your thoughts.

Montana, huh? I was born and about half-raised in Corvallis (south of Missoula, in the Bitterroot). We still hunt mule deer out of Jordan and antelope near Melstone. I write for gun magazines and a bunch of my scribblings are about hunting in Montana.

Darned glad you are going to introduce Montana to the Avalanche. Maybe we won't get a bunch of funny looks come hunting season. Hell, after the Av gets covered with about five hundred pounds of Garfield County gumbo, the locals won't know what kind of truck it is anyway.

Enjoy your new Avalanche, my friend. :B:

Steve, I thought I would be an oddity in the Bitteroot Valley last March but I saw at least one pewter and one black between Hamilton and Stevensville. I actually slept in the back of the Av while parked in the Corvallis baseball field parking lot! I think they have been selling quite a few in Missoula at Karl Tyler Chev. They also supplied a loaner to the UofM football coach. The dealer in Hamilton had a couple on its lot as well.

Glad to hear the Av is being accepted by Montanians. They, by nature, tend to be conservative. Heck, our rancher friend at Melstone finally got his first ranch truck with an automatic transmission last year. Our rancher out of Jordan still will not buy an automatic tranny.

The fact that the Avalanches are selling, demonstrates the fact that fine country folks know a good thing when they see it.

Corvallis baseball field: I was playing ball there one summer Sunday (about 1953), when a super-intense thunder storm hit. I was at bat and had just hit a ball when a lightning bolt hit a tree that was about a hundred feet from me.

The incredible noise of the thunder and the ball strike were simultaneous. Scared the hell out of me.

If it scared you, think of what the pitcher must have thought! My dad was born and raised in Stevensville. I have many old b/w photos of big trout taken out of skinny little Burnt Fork Creek. My guess is that you have been to a Creamery Picnic or two. The Bitterroot Valley is a special place for me and I would like to retire there eventually.

I miss the thunderstorms we used to get in Wyoming. Living in California you don't get much as far as seasons :cautious:

Rock,

Congrats and welcome to the club....I picked mine up on 5/21/02 I was like a kid waiting for Xmas morning to come. I think I set new land speed records driving from the credit union(picked up loan check to get Av) to the dealership.

After you get you Av post pics and START MODDING!!!! ;D
