My truck looked great when I picked it up but three days later I noticed that it had specks ALL over it. I could not tell it was there untill these specks (high spots) started holding the wax while polishing. My service rep. calls this " industrial fall out" and says it's pretty common and not to worry. They tried a lite acid wash with little results and are now working on it with "clay bar". Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Industrial Dust, got into the industrial paint, used in the industrial paint booth, at the industrial truck plant, in Mexico.

I noticed that as well. My paint job isn't very smooth at all. I have put 4 coats of wax anc buffed and buffed. It's VERY Shiney and clean. But the surface is not smooth. It's nice that we have a name for what the deal is with the paint. But what will Chevy do about it. It's a brand new truck!
Has anyone else noticed this with there paint? I have 2004 model. Is this our problem or Chevy's problem? How will this affect the paint job in the future? Beats me I am a chef not a paint expert!

Industrial Fallout - A general term used for pollution and can be found in many forms. Eventually, pollution settles onto the paint finish of all vehicles and can cause serious damage when left untreated.

YES......

brake dust, rail dust, industrial fallout, and junk in general falls onto the paint and kinda sticks to it because it has sharp edges.....

This stuff does sit in the top of the clear coat a bit...

This is what body clay is used for....

See this thread: http://www.chevyavalanchefanclub.com/cafcna/index.php?board=111;action=display;threadid=13668

The clay removes these contaminates by shearing action...The clay is rubbed on the paint with a lubricant...either soap and water mix or quick detailer....and as it slides across paint it grabs the contaminates and pulls them out of paint....

another method is a special wash...such as this..: http://www.autoint.com/NEUTSYSTPAGE.htm

Which works but not as good as clay...

To test.....

wash are of paint....put finger in clean plastic glad baggie...and touch paint lightly....you will feel if it is bumpy....these are contaminates....the plastic heightens your sense of feel...

Good luck

I too had this problem with my Summit White truck. Little orange spots everywhere. I was kinda ticked when my Service Rep also told me industrial fall out and that they would only fix the problem once! I decided I would rather fix it, and the clay bar worked magic! Once done with the clay my truck looked brand new. The last time I used the clay was about this time last year. I washed the truck thuroughly last weekend and my spots are back. I will be using the clay again very soon. I used the Mothers kit and it worked great! Two thumbs up for them!

PS, my cousin had a white 2000 Olds Sillohette, and she too had the orange flecks, but for some odd reason the flecks came back very soon after removal. GM Ended up replacing the car without much of a hastle, apparently the paint was defective, and the rust spots were actually in the paint, where as my spots were just on the surface...

I got my truck back today and the clay really did the trick! I got some minor swirling from all the washing I guess but I should be able to get that out with a little elbow greese. Thank's for the posts and support. This is a great club!

glad i happend to come across this thread. i have the same problem on my '04 Accord. it's only on the driver's side though. the paint feels really bumpy, and rough. it still shines though. ??? i tried a couple of things to no avail. i do have the Mother's clay bar system. i will try that today. thanx for the info.

I took delivery of my truck late last May. I discovered when I went to look at it that it had been stored on the remote lot since the day it arrived. That raised a yellow flag about how long it had been exposed to "industrial" elements.

Here in Southern California, we have the late night/early morning low clouds, morning drizzle, and the typical dust & smog. If I recall correctly, a wonderful carbonic acid mix for the moisture to react with. :cautious:

Though I took delivery around noon, the salesman pulled me aside and stated they had acid washed it and he noted on some paperwork I had actually taken delivery at night. ???

He said this would allow for me to bring it back for any paint/finish defects at a later time. ;)

I washed it the next day and my chamois felt like it was dragging on a non skid surface. :7:

I pulled out the clay bar and really wasn't getting a lot of drag or crud so I went ahead and 'polished' and then waxed. I didn't get any crud on my applicators or finishing towels. It's been as smooth as a baby's behind ever since. (y)

The salesman also told me, if I had any issues with the paint, they would resolve it within 1 year of purchase. He specifically said that would include repainting, if necessary. Of course this was all verbal and none of it is written anywhere. :(

I don't have any issues, but was surprised he brought this up. ???

If you're having issues and you're still under 1 year of delivery, start talking with your salesman/service department. ;)

On an aside here, I took delivery of an 04 Cadillac CTS that was delivered last September and I acquired in late February. This one was on the dealers main lot but even closer to the ocean. :cautious:

Remember the fires we had last October. There was a tremendous amount of ash fallout for several days. And then it rained before it could be properly cleaned up. :8:

None of the paint/finish discussions I had with the Avalanche dealer ever came up.

The finish on this car was stiff too, but not as much as the Avalanche. Same procedure; clayed for awhile and went directly to polish & wax. No problems. :D

I haven't looked too deeply into the CTS owners manual to see the discussion on paint. It seems like there were several pages in the 03 Avalanche book on this subject.

UPDATE: it worked. it worked. it worked. i am so happy. i pulled the Mother's Clay Bar out, and went to work. about 30 - 45 minutes later the rough, sandy feel on my '04 Accord was as smooth as a babys' bottom. i was able to restore the driver side of the car back to it's original state. now it feels like the rest of the car again.
here is one thing i do not understand though. why was the finish rough only on the driver side? secondly, why was it only on the upper half of the car? in other words, the finish was rough from the top of the fender to wheel well. also, from the top pf the driver side door's to the molding. nothing else. ??? oh well. it's gone now. that's all i really care about. i owe it all to you guy's for reminding me about the Mother's. it's great stuff. can't believe i forgot i had it. :2:

punisher....you could have had someone spray painting something on that side and the wind blew it.....this is common....

I had never 'clayed' a car or truck before. Kept hearing about it on the site, and then Crappy Tire started to carry the Mothers Kit. Took a chance and bout one. Had two vehicles both 2 years old. Av and Az. I was AMAZED

I will be claying both again in about the first of June (exceot the new hood ;) )

that is very possible. it crossed my mind. i just can't see how it only affected the upper portion of the car. no contamination from the door molding down. i thought that was weird. ??? anything is possible i guess. especially when my wife is behind the wheel. >:D

someone could have done it on purpose too. i don't want to believe that however. you just never know. :cautious:

Also industrial fallout tends to be on the flat horizontal surfaces (roof hood etc)...as this is where it will sit the longest....

not in my case for some reason. ??? i am just happy it is gone. i don't really care what it was now.

I get pollen all over our trucks.... the stuff is tough to get off....

I'm going to claybar mine too.... NEED SUNSHINE!!!!!!!!!! :E: :E:

i washed the car again today. i noticed that the towel glided smoothly over the area i clay-barred. it dragged over the other surfaces. when i rubbed my hand across them they did not feel as bad as the trouble spots i had, but still it was not right. i just clay-barred the rest of the car. it looks and feels awesome. thanx guys.
next the AV. of course this will have to wait until after the surgery. maybe in the next month, or two. :E:

So I did a little close exam on my truck and low and behold I remove the rubber mat in the bed and Voila! The "Industrial fallout is under the mat. Meaning that it was sprayed on at the factory.
PIC 1
I cleaned off all of the dust. Any sparkely white stuff is the fallout. I even cleaned the metal withpaint prep spray to remove all forms of contamination. The only thing remaining is white sparkely stuff (the fallout) and a footprint. Yes that is my size 13!
