I searched my brains out for several hours over two days trying to find how to locate a wire under the dash which was a positive reverse lamp for my 2002 Chevy Avalanche.  Most of the information that I found was about 2003 and later, and those models have the reverse lamp on the 6 plug BCM under the steering column.

On the 2002 the reverse lamp wire that is under the dash is located on the MBEC (mid bussed electrical center) in block C6 position J.  When I read that elsewhere it didn't make much sense to me, I'm a visual guy so I decided to answer the question for future users and include some pictures.

In this picture you can see that On the 2002 Chevy Avalanche the MBEC is located next to the parking brake.  It has a black plastic cover that swings down from the top after releasing clips on the top and both sides.

In this picture you can see the MBEC with the cover removed and the C6 connector removed

Here is a close up of the light green, under dash reverse lamp, 12V + (positive) wire.

So if you are looking for an easy way to connect to a reverse wire under the dash of a 2002 Chevy Avalanche the place to do it is on the MBEC, C6 block position J, light green wire.  This connection is applicable to anything having to do with putting the truck in reverse, such as parking assist systems, parking assist sensors, rear view cameras, integrated rear view camera - navigation system, back up cameras, back up sensors, video back up systems, rear facing lights, back up lights, or additional back up lights.

Some of the ways that people might search to find information on this topic might be:

Hey, was just thinking about running my reverse wire all the way to the back of the truck and then I read this@!!  So you have to remove the bottom part of the dash to do this?? How long did it take to do this?? If it's more than 5 minutes I might just go with running the wire, already have clips on the bottom of the truck for my rear view camera but just lazy as heck.  Let me know!!  Thanks for doing the research!!

basically you just need to find the green wire and t- tap it from the looks of it after looking at it again right??

I have to ask this question what  kind of mod are you folks doing

me personally?? Have a reverse wire for my avicn1 that I've been meaning to locate and also never hooked up a reverse wire for my reverse camera, just installed direct.  this way when I hit reverse it will come up on the entire screen instead of just a part of it.

Thank's  now I understand I just tied into the backup lights wire at the light itself. I guess with the avicn1 the wire has to run to the unit.

Sorry I didn't answer sooner, but I didn't get an email notice that someone had posted on my thread.

yndio - You don't have to remove the bottom part of the dash to get to the MBEC, I just did that for a couple of reasons
1) easier to route the tap wire to the radio compartment
2) I had opened it up looking for the 6 plug BCM (which I found out later is only on 2003 and later) and a reverse wire on there.

I knew there had to be an under dash connection for a reverse wire and didn't want to have to connect all the way to the rear and run a wire loom on the outside of the truck and then come through the floorboard or the firewall.? I had bought 25 feet of wire just in case, but this method took less than 3 feet.

The research is what took me hours to do, and I had to make 2 splices in the green reverse wire since I didn't have an t-tap connectors (in fact I didn't know that such things existed nor where to get them - I went to Radio Shack and tried to find something like them, but they didn't know what I was asking for.)? I would think that with the pictures and t-taps I could ahve done the job in about 10mintues total.? And it is much easier than crawling around under the truck.? :D

Now my backup (reverse) camera works just great every time I shift into reverse.? And the Dual unit is pretty slick.? I consider it a great deal at the $399 price I got on EBay.

This is good info.  Just about ready to install a BracketCAM.  One question:  I assume you're powering your camera off the reverse light in either the light housing or trailer hitch?

I would figure since you have to run the video signal wire from the backup camera anyway, what's the big deal with running an extra wire or two, although might as well not have to run a loop of the reverse wire back.

I would like to tie my backup camera in so that it is on whenever my car is running, and I cannot find any wiring diagrams that seem to indicate a ACC connection near the back of the truck.  All that exists is the 12V constant at the trailer harness.  I still need to run the video feed anyway, and I figured that would simply run along the existing wire loom and then up through the grommet by the e-brake cable (front left kick panel).  The HU I'm installing allows for a reverse signal to activate the video mode for backup, but I can still manually (I assume) switch the video signal to the aux input at any time...

hey guys, I tapped into a green with white wire.  Obviously the reverse screen was coming on at all times which was weird so I  knew something was wrong.  Any way to take a pic of the wire without the bottom dash being out?? Obviously I found the wrong wire.  ugghh

Yndio

Weird, there were pics on the beginning of this thread not more than a few weeks ago.

I don't remember the wire having white.  The connection wasn't in the BCM, but the MBEC.

You do not need to remove any kick panels to find it.  on the '02, it is near where the e-brake pedal is, and has a plastic push nut.  I'd have to look, but I think the connector had a bunch of orange wires (probably ignition) and then the green backup wire.

Here is a pic of mine.

ItsStopher,

Where did you get that tap connector?  That one looks pretty hefty compared to the crummy kind you can get at autozone.

I don't use those.  What I usually do is remove the pin from the connector (takes practice), then I strip about 1/2" insulation and solder the tap wire, then cover the whole thing with heat shrink (that is why I need to remove the pin).

BUT, if I had some tap connectors like that, it might be mechanically and electrically sound, especially for interior.

That connector came with the wire from Pioneer.

Oh.

That sucks.  Seems that there are quite a bit of tap connectors out there that vary greatly in quality.  If I had known some of these better ones were out there I might have researched them for use in some of my mod projects.

But I suppose I can't go wrong with my method :D
