Good Morning,
Has anyone out there used an XM antenna from a later model Avalanche to make XM work on an earlier model Avalanche?

The reason for this is that I don't want the aftermarket SXV300V1 antenna on my instrument panel. The goal is to integrate a stock GM antenna with an aftermarket Kenwood head unit.

Have not read on here anyone trying.

But there are small magnet antenna that go outside and stick to roof and you can run the wire to receiver...
Mine is roof rear middle and ran wire into truck via CHSML brake light grommet and to passenger side and down and then under carpet up to dash.

I did that with my Pioneer XMP3i radio.

$16

I'm considering something like this. It should be pretty close to the same dimensions as the On Star antenna whose service did not last as long as the payments.

From the antenna, the signal should go to an extension cable and from there, to the XM tuner. It's going to go to a Kenwood X704 head unit.
Time to start saving money. Suspension work comes first.

Same place I put mine..

Randy, did you have the On Star antenna before?
How long of an extension cable did you use to go from the antenna to the XM tuner?

Yes I had the COn Star antenna and I thought about trying to use it but there was reason but I don't remember why. I think it had to do with the connector and not wanting to cut and splice the one that came with the Pioneer head unit.

But the one that it came with was 16.5 feet and was long enough to where I mounted it which was just in front of the third brake light on roof of the cab, it has a magnetic base and sticks pretty good. I was worried about it moving around and scratching the paint but it never has.

I filed a tiny notch in the bottom of the plastic on third brake light cladding for the cable to pass under it with out being smashed and to hold it. Then routed the cable though an existing rubber grommet for the TBL wiring, then along the headliner to the A pillar. I just remembered why I didn't try to use the COn Star, it was because the Pioneer head unit has an GPS antenna and the Pioneer XM/Traffic add on has a GPS antenna so there are two and trying to use both though the COn Star antenna was probably not a good idea and would just lead to problems. I already had a big project with putting a double din in an 2002 that came with a din and a half.. I think I had at least 42 test fittings for the radio and heater controls that had to be lowered..

XM was installed in the Avalanche today. For anyone following this, I used an antenna for a 2004 Avalanche/Yukon. If your Avalanche did not come with XM installed, you will need to the wiring harness which goes from the antenna to the XM tuner.

Here are pictures of what my Avalanche looks like now. Notice the OnStar antenna is gone. Oh, the retaining nut which secures the antenna is unique to that year/model of antenna.

And finally, what the parts look like. Sorry the last photo isn't larger. It's from E Bay. Durwin
