Interior lights dumb question

So after a couple months, I noticed when in reverse, there's some little lights above the mid gate glass inside. I think it's 2 red and an orange or something. I can't find anything anywhere telling me what in the world these are supposed to be for.

Backup sensor indicators. It lets you know how close you are to an object.

Oh weird. I figured it was something like that. How exactly do they work?
