I had this done because I can, not because I'm going to watch movies while I'm driving. It is another toy for my toy. It gives me access to the internet on the go, more navigation options, full time weather and a screen I don't have any trouble reading and a lot of options voice controlled through Siri.
It took about a week and a half for the panel insert to be custom made and installed. Thanksgiving contributed to the time. It is replacing the panel insert which housed the two storage compartments and lighter receptacles below the hvac control (first gen Av). One lighter receptacle was relocated inside the armrest/flip top storage compartment on the center console. I only relocated one, as I only use it to charge my phone when necessary with a usb adaptor; everything else is hardwired. If needed I could always buy a splitter or install another.
The ipad mini will charge when in the panel and is connected to my head unit through the video source. All audio goes through my sound system, all video remains on the ipad. I like it, it brings my interior up to date with technology. Volume controls are enabled through the steering wheel controls, but I can't change songs playing from the ipad with the steering wheel controls - have to tap the screen. A module that will do dual duty enabling full steering wheel controls for both the radio and ipad is due out in January. Currently, my steering wheel controls are fully compatible with the head unit.
I'm happy with it. I just got it back so sorry for the night pics. Will take some more tomorrow. The first pic is the open panel area waiting for its panel back. The second shows the lighter socket relocation. Third shows the dash area with ipad installed. Fourth and Fifth are close-ups of the ipad installed. Sixth is of the custom insert with the ipad removed.
