Is there supposed to be a heat shield here?

I heard a rattle coming from under my truck and slid under to find what I thought was a broken heat shield. Turns out it was just a piece of scrap metal someone had put on. It was attached to the bolt just above the O2 sensor in the pic.

Been looking online and can't find any parts. Is there supposed to be a heat shield just behind the drivers side catalytic converter? There's wires and some kind of lines up there too, not sure if it's fuel or brake lines. Or was there some issue that maybe prompted a previous owner to put one there?

I'm getting a loud rattle too. could be a heat shield, loose O2 sensor, or muffler is bad.
I'll take a look today if it stops raining
and see if mine is like yours.

Thanks. I just drove it and the really loud rattle is gone. There's a small one here and there, but since I just lost the lower shield on the passenger converter my guess is its one of those or the one around the exhaust manifold. My exhaust system seems solid.

I can't tell if you're picture is same model but my 07 has a sheild near drivers side catalytic converter. I believe it deflects heat away from the rubber & wire bundles on frame?

'07 was the 1st year for the Gen II Avalanches, so it's a bit different under there. Maybe I'm looking at your pics wrong but I think the shield you're talking about in yours is towards the front of the truck, the shield in question on my reuck would be towards the rear.

Rear? O2 sensors I thought all were mid forward on these.
Don't believe is any stock heat sheilds except for the one near drivers side swey bar bolts.
I'm sure many owners could add their own makeshift kinds if they were worried about heat or road debris.
Me I swapped the plastic front belly sheild for a large sheet meatal I cut & fit custom.

You're correct on the O2 sensor placements. Keep in mind my pics are taken facing towards the rear of the truck. Looked to me like your 1st two pics are taken facing the front of your truck.

Yes the camera was under the drivers seat & step rail facing across toward passenger front tire.
I believe you're photo was angled rear at crossbeam that supports the transfer case?
I was faced forward trying get the lil heat shild in both pictures.
My 07 looks similar facing rear but no meatal sheilds.

Well that answers my question! Thanks! Even tho yours is the next generation, with it being that similar I doubt it'd be necessary to have a shield there.
Now just to figure out what the other little random rattle is. Most likely a plate on my cat.

sorry I couldn't take a good pic but your original pic does look the same as my system. There is a heat shield attached to the floor. Mine is actually in very good shape, not rusted, not rattling.
I got under the truck at home while it was running and rattling (comes and goes). Found the rattle on the muffler. Pretty sure its an original muffler, it has a heat shield attached to the top of itself, at both ends. One end has rusted off and rattles loud. Check your muffler TFjed when you get that rattle.
Not to mention its leaking muffler fluid from the bottom llol. ( Condensation, rain, car wash.) It must get water in the muffler and saturating a layer of rust inside and drips like a bad coffee maker. I told the ol lady I need a new one and she says OK but not a loud one. Dangit, she knows I watch Exhaust Addict videos

As a quick close to my question, I discovered what the rattling was. Not only was it some home made piece of "heat shield" but I ended up losing a cover for a catalytic converter. It got ran over immediately and was in the middle of an intersection so couldn't identify 100%, but about a week later another fell off and I was able to retrieve it. Then 2 days later a 3rd one fell off as I pulled up to my house! So now I'm 3 for 4 heat shields gone. Gona check to be sure they aren't rusting more when I do my oil/transfer case change soon.

Oh darn I may need to get a Magnaflow system..... 🤣

Unintended weight reduction.
