Is this the OnStar to Bluetooth conversion that we've been looking for?

Like the mafia,  Fred didn't clear it with the godfather, so they clipped him............think he violated the selling rule.  I think it's ok for us to recommend something, even give a link, but not ok to actively sell, unless your a site partner....that would be my guess.

Sounds about right. Couldn't even find his account on here to even PM him.
So I went to his web site to follow up on his progress.

Onstar Update:

Okay......my module is brand new, right from GM, never been installed in any vehicle. After my install, the Bluetooth works flawlessly. I love it. But, the Onstar light on the right hand side of the mirror is a solid red. I can't even call Onstar by hitting the blue Onstar button on the mirror. I have to punch the red emergency button, then when they answer ask them for tech support.

If you tell them you have a red light.....they won't even attempt to re-activate your Onstar. They will tell you that you have a hardware problem, and it needs to go to the dealership. I even lied to them and told them that it was green, and I need to have it re-activated. They tried it, and it didn't work. Then they told me I had to take it to the dealership to have them do it. I called back 3 separate times, and talked to 3 different people. It failed all 3 times, and they all told me I had to take it to the dealership because it has to be re-programed at the dealership.

So now I have an appointment set up for Wednesday afternoon at the dealer. I just hope that once I get it there they can get it going. I have this fear that they are going to tell me that my 07 won't work with that new Bluetooth module or something. When I talked to the guy in the service department, he acted like he had absolutely no idea what I was talking about. We will see what happens. I will update then.

Anybody else take theirs in to the dealer yet to have the Onstar re-activated? I know many of you don't care for Onstar and don't want it......but I am one of the guys that actually likes it and wants to have it working.

I found this GM Tech Instruction Sheet on another forum I hope it helps guys......

Note:

? It is critical to use the service replacement Communication Interface Module (CIM) only in the vehicle for which it was ordered.

? Failure to perform the following procedures will result in a red LED, DTC(s) being set, and limited or incomplete OnStar? services

? An OnStar? button-press to the OnStar? call center is not required to complete the procedure.

? It may take up to 24 hours for OnStar? service to become fully activated after performing the procedures.

? Perform the following procedure only once. Repeat attempts of the procedure may result in a delay of the activation process.

Connect the scan tool to the vehicle.

Connect the Techline Information System (TIS) terminal to the scan tool.
Select the CIM Communication Interface Module Set-up and perform the set-up procedure.

Select the ONSA TIS2WEB Pass-Thru OnStar? Activation (Replaced/Upgraded Units Only) option using the service programming system (SPS).

The default language for the new CIM is English. To change the language to French or Spanish, access the scan tool.

Inform the customer that it may take up to 24 hours for the OnStar? service to become fully activated.

Hell, I haven't tried it since the day I left the dealer. I'll try it tomorrow morning to see if it has the correct vehicle.

My OnStar works!!!!! I tried it when I first left the dealer and it did not work so I thought it was a no go. Then I read the post that it might take a while to process so I tried it again this morning and BINGO. Everything works now. Bluetooth, OnStar, and voice dialing to my Blackberry.

We're in the final testing stages right now. When we release it will have CID and fully functional steering wheel controls. The pass thru to Onstar is probably not going to happen, it is just cost prohibitive. I have seen where some of you are buying a new vcim unit in order to have bluetooth and Onstar, that is a great resolution for those who want both.

For those of you that have purchased the current unit we will be able to update it at no charge to you for the steering wheel controls if you like. We will email directly when the update is available.

Last but not least we are working on a notification system similar to the stars that can notify the authorities in the event of an accident. This project is 3-6 months out if it does come together.

Thanks for the interest,

Fred

Welcome back Fred!
Gotta have On*. Why is it "cost prohibitive"?

Oh man sorry to hear that, you had two GREAT selling points on the new release...easy to install and working with On*.  I am thinking you just lost half of your potential customers when you said no On*.  So how can it be cost prohibitive if your losing business.  I would pay more if it worked with On*, my guess is no one else would mind either.

I wouldn't pay more to have OnStar because I have NO interest in spending another dime for OnStar... directly or indirectly.

I've read the 'testimonial' thread and I have to be honest.  It's hard to go thru all the Mustang talk to hear a few good words.  JMO.

It's real simple, the engineering firm that can draft the solution to pair the Galaxy with Onstar wants about $80,000.00 upfront to do it. To us that is just cost prohibitive.

Yikes!  Well, unfortunately I love my On*, and therefore will keep searching for a solution that fits my needs.  Thanks for trying!

The Plantronics VoyagerPRO earpiece solved my Bluetooth problems, with me sticking with my handheld cell phone that has all of my contacts, etc.  I thought long and hard about a speaker phone solution, as well as taking advantage of the OnStar phones comparitively good voice recognition capacity.  I found over time that I like having an in vehicle back up telephone line separate from my main cell phone, AND, separate from my plan.  At $10.00 a month to add the line, that adds up to $120 pre-commited dollars per year, and I actually spend a lot less buying minutes a la carte from OnStar for the OnStar phone.  It is fun to have two-line conference call capacity in the car, which I've used on occasion.

OnStars rates are ridiculous.  I can't justify spending THAT much for OnStar and then being charged again for the minutes talking.  Why spend all that money when cell service uses free mins.  Also, juggling between two phone numbers was a pain.  Half of the people I know thought the trucks number was my cell number and wondered why I didn't answer half the time and didn't have voice mail.

Rip out the OnStar crap and go bluetooth.

To each their own.  I view it like an insurance policy.  If my vehicle gets stolen, keys locked in, can't find it in the parking lot, or get in a wreck and knocked unconscience - I know that I can rely on them.  So, LIKE an insurance policy - I hope I never have to use it, but knowing its there makes me feel better when I'm driving my AV!

I prefer to keep my On* and go a different route for my bluetooth.

I agree that everybody has their own reasoning to like or not like OnStar.  All of the features you mention are good and when I had OnStar,  I had the same thinking.  But I've been so disappointed (on more than one occasion) with OnStar's service that I'm more than happy to rip the thing out!  Not a good value.

Pretty hot topic over on the GM-Trucks forum.  :B:
We got bluetooth to work just fine. Still having problems getting On* to link up with your VIN and the new Gen8 Onstar VCIM. Will post when we have On* working and how we did it!  >:D

OK Fred time to resurrect this thread again, been over three months.  How long does this final testing take...you been saying we are about to release this for almost half a year... ...let's get this thing on the road.

Which VCIM part number did you get and where were you able to buy it??  Also did you already have Onstar hooked up the the old VCIM when you took it out and installed the new one??

I had an active Onstar account when I went to swap my VCIM. The VCIM that I got was p/n 20783877. I bought it from a forum member over on GM-Trucks.com that was turning his truck in and was converting it back to stock. I got a pretty good deal on it as it also came with the bluetooth antenna attached to the back. Like I said before, the bluetooth works absolutely great, but we still can't get Onstar to link the new module to our vehicle to get the account working again. Kinda blows, because I want to get the new Onstar app working with my Droid, which requires a healthy Onstar account, oh and btw, a 2011 vehicle, but we got guys working on that too.

Cheers  >:D
