Is Your Spare Tire A Firestone???

I still have this one high on my list of dealer questions...I plan I hearing their reasoning for this one...directly from the dealer themselves....My hopes is that they give me a goodyear in its place.... :B:

>:D

Mine too.......4 17" Goodyear Wranglers w/wol. & 1 -16" steel rim Firestone as spare. and I paid EXTRA-$1200 for the OnRoad package.

The difference was, I did all my research on GM's website, and had copies of all their literature, which stated FIVE(5) 17" tires and wheels came with the onroad package.. ???

The dealer also told me that's the way it is AND if you don't like it, call GM!!! :8:

Well I did..............
A long story made short, after going thru GM, from the janitor on up to the Customer Service Manager, the dealer ate it ALL, replacing ALL five(5) tires and wheels with 17" ers, a written appology and several other freebies............

Anyone want the manager's name and direct phone # in Detroit???? >:D >:D

Good Luck!!!!!!!!

Hey Ice, where did you find the info about the Av coming with 5-17" Wheels & Tires? I have a Z-71, so I'm sure it would be the same. I've already had a flat and found the Firestone. I traded in a 2000 Suburban that ran the Wilderness Tires, and they were the loudest, worst riding tires I've ever owned! It would be nice to have that info available when I start complaining.

Z-71 with fire spare. I'm happy to only have one this time! 97 f-150 had five. I bought it with 22000 on them. They apperd to still have more than half the tread left. the next 5000 I had 4 flats and two blowouts. One of the flats was the spare, I was so pissed, I tried to run it off the rim. :8: :8:

The next day I got BFG's put on. Went to 79,000 with no more flats! ;D

My wife says my spare tire is Mc'donalds.

If you go to http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html
and punch in the tire size for the 17's on your truck and the size of the spare you will see that they are both the same with less than a 10th of a inch. One being a 75 series and the regular tires being 70 series make the difference. But I do agree on the Firestones, why not Goodyear?

I noticed the smaller Firestone spare a few days after I picked my AV up at the dealer. ?I called the dealer and they just said, "that's the way they are coming in". ?This is obviously something Chevy ain't too proud of. ?I've got the same Firestone on my 2001 Tahoe. ?I really doesn't seem to be a bad tire, but I wonder if there are any safety problems with one odd ball size tire doing 75 mph on the freeway if you ever have to use the spare ;D.

All merged up for further discusions about brand of spare tire....

The size is discussed in another thread......

IMO there isn't anything wrong, intrinsically, with the Firestone spare. These same tires are performing well on Subs and Tahoes. As I see it, the "only" real problem is that when you get a new set of rubber, you will need 4 new tires instead of 3. (Remember when we would buy 3 new ones, bring the unused or seldom used, (matching) spare down to the ground and use the best of the worn tires as a spare. I guess this new method provides a degree of safety as you will most likely never have a "worn" spare, (at least not much). Tip...check the air in your spare occasionally.

I noticed last night that I have a Bridgestone dueler under my truck. I picked up the truck saturday. Personally I waould rather have all the tires be duelers, they are good tires.

did you buy new or used?

For help in satisfying curiosity on this thread, just checked my spare today and it is a Bridgestone Dueler as well. Bought my truck new in December of '02, was built in November of '02.

Don't believe the Ford hype about Firestone though. They designed the tire on the Explorers and gave it to Firestone to build. None of the other tires Firestone sells are the same as the ones they built for Ford. The Explorer is also narrower and higher than the Tahoe/Suburban/Avalanche. It's a bad combination. They shot themselves in the foot and dragged it out in court O.J. style to worm out of their own problem.

I have a Firestone spare as well. Also have new Firestones on the Cadillac. Firestone got caught in the middle, they have made excellent tires for many years, not including the old 721 (?) radials which were a disaster.
Ford designed a vehicle and the tires, Firestone built them and caught hell because that car was unforgiving of driver error and/or quick maueuvers. Low air pressure further complicated the situation. Which it would do on any vehicle.
A blowout with a lot of drivers could lead to catastrophe, regardless of the vehicle, a high center of balance, i.e. Explorer, just about cinches it.
My thought is, that to restore confidence in their product they are likely building one of the best tires on the market today.
I guess nearly all former U.S. tire companies are owned by Japanese firms. I think GoodYear is still an exception.
