I am having issues with my 2004 Z66 avalanche where the truck does not seem to want to shift from 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th and it will not engage overdrive or is stuck in overdrive (im not sure) it will randomly rev out to 4000-6000rpms and will not shift until I let it drop back below 2500-2000rpms this happens around 35 mph and 50 mph.
I also have a stored code for C0283 - VSES Mode Switch Signal
its been doing it for some time now Recently it got bad enough that it caused the transmission to "overheat" and cause a transmission hot notification
I am not sure of the cause, we did a transmission fluid and filter change and nothing changed. please help...

C0283 is unrelated. I'm no mechanic but this sounds like internal failure. A very short google search for the 4l60E not being able to shift into 3rd or 4th led me to the following info.. I think it's time for a transmission shop to take a look..

Bad Sprag

No 3rd 4th 4L60E Problem4L60 E Sprag
If you end up with a bad sprag, the 4L60E won’t be able to shift into 3rd or 4th gear. It provides a direct connection between the input housing and the input sun gear. Without being able to lock, it won’t be able to facilitate the transfer of energy to the upper gears and the transmission will remain in 2nd gear.

3/4 Clutch Pack

Your 4L60E has a set of clutches that work with both 3’rd and 4’th gear. It’s referred to as the 3-4 clutch pack. A bad 3-4 clutch pack can certainly cause the 3’rd and 4’th gear to stop working. In fact, once the transmission “shifts” into third, it’ll feel like you lost the whole thing. You can shift into second to get yourself home. Just be careful on the highway. The YouTube video below shows someone going through that exact situation.

Sounds like a common clutch pack failure.

Time for a rebuild.
