Jake brake

why would you put a jake brake on a gas engine?

on a desiel yes.... but on a gas there is natural engine braking, on desiel there is not.

Just my 0.02cents

Grey_Av :B:

I don't know.... they sound great!

Can't you hear it now.... you hear the Jake Brake roar ... look up and see an AV ;D

Sounds kinda fun.... at least once or twice

If you have the money for high end brake systems go with Eradibrakes [$1,100.00 - $3,200.00) and you will have a braking system without any mods to the engine. I have never even heard of a diesel Av but still would not put on Jake Brakes.

You are right. There are no diesel Avs. I will have to wait until I get my Unimog to have a jake brake. ;D

;D haha you know that would be a cool idea if you had the money to do it. I would be jaking all over the place! haha

i do not see the need for one on anything less than a Kenworth, Peterbuilt, International, and so on...
As it turns out the 2500 is outrageously freewheeling and benefits from the use of the engine for braking - that is why many of us drop it into 3rd in touch and go city driving, more responsive and easier on the brakes. My Jeep GC has a button to disable OD - smart folks. ;D

good bit of info. thanx.

Just a side note, the benefits of the Jake brake, while primarily a diesel thing, have not gone unnoticed by the manufacturers - Ford is developing and will show a truck in the near future that uses a hydraulic system to store [translate] momentum into a resevoir during deceleration and use it to boost acceleration from a a stopped or high torque demand situation.

This should provide a significant increase in gas mileage.

The other variation that has been experimented with is using generator/motor combos to charge during the deceleration phase [braking] and then assist in acceleration from a stop.

this hydraulic thing could be cool...they musty be putting a bidirectional pump on the engine and let it clutch in when you let off gas and then the oil gets pump ed into an accumulator......then when you punch the go-pedal a valve must release the oil back into the pump (now a motor) which would help spin the motor.....

Man with this accumulator you could do some things with Hydraulics......think of a hydrualic winch, maybe a small crane....hydraulic tailgate...hydraulic suspension height control.....
