JEFF D SUB BOX SECRETS REVEALED

Wow...they look awesome.

Well....as much as Im unsure of 8's, I may have to give these a try. Full function of midgate, AND a perfect fit.

decisions decisions.
What mounting depth are your 8's - like 4-1/2"

If you read through this whole post you'll see that nothing is as  easy as it seems. You will have to do some minor thinking for your self with this design when you build your own. I will tell you that when I did mine the concept of maintaining the midgate function and most of all NOT having to keep pulling them out when i did use it was what drove me to keep working on these boxes until they worked for me. I made mine for the speaker volume necessary for the subs I bought and they saound perfect. I will say this also, if your intent is to rock the rest of the world around you while making sure you'll need a hearing aide sooner rather than later then the 8" subs most likely will not do it for you. If your just looking to rock your own little world or the planet you live on then these boxes are what you want. Good luck.

Yeah...thats what I figured. Its going to take some tinkering. Ive got all the wood working tools, so maybe Im just being lazy by wanting to buy an enclosure behind the seats.

I dont want to bounce the poor 6 month old baby in the car next to me, but I do want the 22-30 Hz range of Lows...thats where Im nervous about the 8s.

However I do have a 5" 100-watt JBL subwoofer on my computer that sounds almost like a home theater Sub...cant buy them anymore, had to resolder on new Caps and transistors a few months back, now the puter ROCKS again!

Im seriously considering doing some 10's directly under the seat in a shallow bow, and extending the box back behind and under the seat support bracket.....if I do, I will post a DIY.

Either Way....Im gunna get SUBS.

Do your 8s hit really low? - A good tune to test is Stabbing Westward "Save Yourself" - or some Tool songs...they go very low...down to the low 20's, my puter sub misses the low on SW's Save Yourself...

Now what subs you buy will determine how low can they go. My Rockford Fosgate Punch's rattle my truck at 50 hz and below. I love them.

They are very loud, but not like the idiot  :beating: driving down the street who is rattling your office windows while sitting at a traffic light.

My GS300's Dual 12's are Very LOUD....INSIDE the car. Outside the car they are not very noticable. I attribute this mostly to the fact that Lexus uses Factory Dyna-Mat (or equivilant) material on ALL surface of the car, trunks, floors, truck lidss etc, AND they have a very thick rubberized undercoating on the entire car...

Not sure how much soundproofing GM places on the AV...I will know more when I start putting in the Subs.

I really also dont need neighbors or criminals knowing how loud my vehicle is ... just so they can take what they know is inside.

>:D

I got hit by thieves  once, and it felt like I was violated.  :8:

I don't play it loud around the wrong crowd, I cover anything exposed at night and take the faceplate inside.

Hard to see, but at the bottom of the inside panel near the back. The cross support is blocking the view.

Hey Z66 - is that a power inverter in front of the amp? Do you run large gauge wire to that and Amp, and then splice off to both?

Yes Dave that is exactly right. It's only a 400 watter, but I ran a 1/2 drill (with a 1/2" mason bit) off of it the other day to drill holes in our street (to mount a speed bump). I also power my train horn air compressor off the same feed, but use a different fuse holder.

Where is every one putting in their terminal cups?
I actually decided to skip the terminal cups and just tied a knot in the wire then siliconed the heck out of the small hole i drilled and passed the wires through. I figured a small hole was better than a big hole to silicone after putting in the terminal cups.

Anyone have any experince with the Q-Logic Sub Cabinet? You can view if you follow the link below

It is a q-logic GMA 110  Looks pretty cool just wondering if anyone has one or has heard one.

I havnt.

It would be interesting to hear from anyone who has listened to one. I always suspect ulra-custom boxes with all the odd shapes and curves to resonate at certain frequencies and sound wierd...maybe Im wrong.

one of the stereo shops i talked to while investigating putting in my set up tried to sell me on the idea of having down facing subs firing into the floor. I just figured i wanted to hear the music, i really didn't want the floor to hear the music.

I've always wanted something like that but with a James Bond effect. I want trap doors that open to the outside with the push of a button. Than everyone (and the floor) can feel the beat drop.

Here is the deal with good, clean bass: It radiates in ALL directions. It doesnt matter if its downfiring or upfiring, behind the seats etc...

Facing the woofer toward the floor, with proper distance between the woofer and the floor is the same as havijng the woofers behind the seat...after all, the seat has a metal plate backing, and the woofers are behind it.

I think the problem is most of the designs dont allow for ample space for the sound to get out from the woofer...porting a box would help solve that, however you would have resonant frequencies that boom, and other frequencies that are dead - sealed boxes are Always better for that reason.

You can hide a subwoofer anywhere in a normal sized room, and the bass will seem to come from "nowhere" - if a box is properly designed in a vehicle, the bass will just be there, you wont be able to hear where the bass is coming from....when you achieve that, youve got a well balanced system.

I think Im gunna take a stab an making custom boxes under, and behind the seat, which allow 100% fold-down of the mid-gate....Im just not sure I want to unhook the box when I lower the midgate, and the other boxes sold on-line dont allow the gate to fold down very far.

I will post pix when I get around to doing this.

The Q-Logic Sub Cabinet down firing design was what I had in mind originally. The problem I see is it might be too high to get the midgate  all the way down. So that's why I went with the design in this thread.

any body in the south east PA area want a set of these boxs? I am trading in my AV tomorrow and took the box's out. I will give them to you if you want them. no subs though, sorry I need those for the next project.

I am about two hours from the MD border. I am around exit 31 off route 476 north east extention. I will give to you if you want them. Other wise they will sit in my garage taking up space. Lol! Let me know what you have in mind for pick up.

I just finished putting 2 ten inch subs in the back of my 2005 AV.  They sound great but I am having a hard time matching up the levels with the door speakers.  Door speakers are replaced and amped.

BTW my midgate comes about 3/4 or the way down, which isn't bad.  But these boxs I bought from HiFi Sound come right out for those trips to the Home Depot etc.

I would like to post PICTURES but I understand you need to acheive a post count to do that.  If anyone can post them for me I will shoot you an email with them attached.

I was very pleased how nice the wiring and amp board came out, maybe I can give the gang some new idea's.

  Thanks,  Ed

Hey Z66,  What year is your AV ?

Reason Im asking is I see a difference from your seat frame, and Stephan's - Mine is an 05, and my frame drops down on the Drivers side, 7" away from the end of the seat frame, it drops about 1-3/4" to make room for the Seat Belt Buckles, which sit on a steel bracket bolted accross the frame, so its not posisble to put the boxes in your way, you have to make the tilted box style Stephan made.

Im half-temped to cut the frame and re-weld a new bracket on it so I can get a wider (10") box in there.

you DO have to go with a tilted box in I believe every year Avy. That bracket you want to cut on the dotted line is the support for the seat frame and seat belt buckle. I think it'd be a mistake to cut it and you probably wouldn't gain much of anything. You'd be suprised how well the 8" subs fit into the box with the tilted frame. You just need to play with the angles to make it fit and fit your speaker.
