JEFF D SUB BOX SECRETS REVEALED

Poly fill creates an image that the box is bigger to the sub. I believe with these boxes you would only use 3 or 4 oz. of poly fill if i am correct. Please correct me if i am wrong

What does the poly fill do for your sound?

If you have additional air volume, polyfill will help smooth the curve of which frequencies the sub outputs. So that it doesnt get that single frequency "boom"ing effect from reall small enclsoures.

The probolem is Polyfill takes up are volume, so if you put it into a box without enough volume, you will kill the lower end and reduce overall loudness.

Yeah, that V12 is an oldie but goodie.  I think that AMP is about 12 years old, still pushes those tens real good.  The other Alpine F300 is spankin new.

Dave, I posted a few shots on your thread, just wanted to let the folks on this one see what I was doin.  That Amp board I made slips right in there nice and tight.

Here is my go at the boxes prior to putting them in. I decided to go with the rubber under coating for the covers.. I figure you wont see them so i didn't take the time to carpet them. This was my first time ever putting together a sub box but they are sealed and sound awesome.. I will put up some pix of the install after hiding the wires and such.

Has any one put poly fill in their boxes?

Yes I have. Polyfil adds more volume seen by the sub by having the sub move the polyfil. This acts as a delay in reaching the box.

You can add too much and stifle the box, so don't over do it.

I have my box done, and Im debating on undercoat, or carpet.

I havnt the slightest clue where to go find carpet at....any one know where?

How long did it take for you to build both boxes?

Went to a car stereo wholesale shop and bought it by the yard. I only needed one yard wide as the roll was 5 or 6 feet long.  Ran about 16 bucks. Any install shop will sell you the stuff.

I spent several days building the boxes, mostly because it was an after work project and the glue drying. It could be done in one afternoon I suppose if you hot glued and nailed it. I used Elmers, hot glue and nails. I pre-drilled the nail holes so as not to split the 1/2" mdf.

Thanks. I will call around. I went to one place friday and they were dicks...I wont name the place, but they are big in Phoenix. If you try to do stuff yourself, some places treat you like crap...so...I wont buy from them. Pretty easy.

I used industrial strength adhesive and screws...pre-drilled. It will never blow apart. I clamped mine too...I did it after work - 5 days. I wont do another one like it.

It took me about a half of case of beer and 6 hours to do the boxes.. That was non stop though.. Then of course took 3 days to coat it with the under coat.. and 2 to let them fully dry.. (ordered the subs the night i finished the boxes.) They sound good.. I decided against the poly fill. They hit and sound good so.... If i were to do the boxes again i would make them an "L" shape to get more cubic feet out of them.

So, Id like to know how other people glued/attached their carpet to their boxes.

Ive got pitch-black nice carpet for it. Its about 1/8th thick, maybe a tad less, and has a rubberized backing.

With a square box, Id just use adhesive and wrap the corners....but are there any tricks with odd shapes and jogs like my box has?

Does anyone use staples, or just glue?

Thanks!

That sounds a little thick for your box. I actually went to a bunch of stereo shops asking them where they got their cloth to cover their custom built boxes. One of the shops told me about a local outlet that sold what they termed "Trunk Liner Fabric" it was exactly what the pro shops use on their boxes and it blends with the factory carpet beautifully. They also sold me the spray on adhesive to use with it and gave me pointers on making it a clean looking install. Basically I just laid it over the box and glued one side at a time. when it was necessary I trimmed with scissors along the edge then with a new sharp razor to get the cleanest looking edge. I didn't put any liner on the bottom of the boxes. Hope this helps.

Its actually closer to 1/16" thick I think, and it bends pretty easy, but it sounds like what you used is almost like fabric?
You know...Living in Phoenix is great weather-wise...but finding stuff like this for projects is impossible. Im from Portland originally, and finding this kind of stuff was easy. Nobody here knows Jack! Anyway, I cant even find an audio shop with Shallow subs in stock...NOT ONE...Un-Believable. On-line it is.

Thanks for the info...Im gunna try and find the spray adhesive as well. I was also considering leaving the bottom uncarpeted...I appreciate the hhelpful info! Great forums!

3M spray on adhesive you get in a department store is what I used, and it works great. The material is more like a fabric than a carpet, very pliable.

I have a Can of 3M adhesive, just wasnt sure if it would stand up over time. I tend to go overkill on constructing things.

Thanks! Now I know.

well i know they are waaaaay over priced but as a last resort you can always go to the stereo shop at best buy and get the fabric to cover your boxes. I priced it out and they are extremely overpriced. it was like 4X the price of the fabric place i found my trunk liner material at. I will see if I can dig up the name of the place I got mine at in the next couple of days maybe you can give them a call and see if they'll mail you a yard of material ......it shouldn't be that much $$.

My Best Buys in Phoenix Claim to not carry any of it.

Im telling you...Phoenix is a pain in the butt to find certain construction materials in.

I found 2 VERY small car audio places that have it. Id rather support them anyways.

Oh yes I can - and I did  >:D LOL (I never said Two 10" Subs - I only wanted 1)

Midgate closes all but about 1-3/4", and will go down another 3/4" once I modify the rubber bumpers.  >:D

At Any rate - Thank you Jeff D for giving ideas on non-ordinary box shapes, and for noting the notch on the bottom of the box - things that helped me with my initial design.

Dave you CANNOT fit 10" speakers under the seats and get enough cu/ft volume for the sound your looking for yet still retain midgate function. That is the point of this whole thread. A box that maintains midgate function, while giving you the best sound, out of the biggest possible speakers, that will fit in the space. Stop spending sleepless nights pondering over the inevitable when soneone else already lost enough sleep over this for all of us. Really your only question is what do you want more at this point, bigger speakers and a shorter bed or the setup explained in this thread and maintain use of the midgate with the full use of your available bed space. Good luck.

Hey everyone, Im also new. I just traded in my 05' Audi A4 and Workvan for a 06' Avalanche with On* & Bose. How did you guys wire those subs in? Did you retain the bose sub under the center console or do our trucks not have it?

This is a very nice setup I wish someone would make this for me...I suck at woodwork.  To bad I couldn't fit some old school 10 or 8 inch solobarics in the same place.

I used an Alpine class D sub amp but it is possible to use the factory amp. There are separate threads here on how to wire.

I built these boxes over the weekend. It took longer than I had anticipated but I think they turned out nice. I'm still waiting for the bed liner coating and the paint to dry on them. They need another coat of paint. Where I put sealant on the seams, the paint dried glossier than the rest, so with another couple coats that will go away. I'm hoping to have the install finished by next weekend.

Where the sub magnet requires some mdf to be shaved down on the bottom of the enclosure, I ended up using the router with a 1/2" straight cutting bit to cut out about a 3" x 5" rectangle, 1/4" deep. This worked perfectly and was much easier than sanding/drilling/chiseling, by far.
