I'm thinking about adding a KN FIKP and some type of dual exhaust sytem so that I can reach the 300 hp level (strictly a psychological thing). My quesiton is what gains should I expect with the KN? Exaust system say a flowmaster 70? I've read differeing accounts of limited imporvements to remarkable imporvement. Before I drop more cash I'd like to know if it is worth it.

I know that the volant is a fully sealed intake and they advertise a 15hp gain on the 5.3 Avalanche Volant info

but then again, you read some good things about
K&N FIPK Generation II
Airforce One
AEM
and others.

I know some of the more High tech guys will jump in to help you out when they see the post, but from everything i have found since being on the forum for roughly a year and a half it will take some serious items to get you to the 300Hp mark.
The 285 hp 5.3 makes just over 200 rear wheel Hp.
I added the items listed in my signature and I hope I got 25-30 hp out of all them combined.
The K and N states up to X amount of Horsepower, If you read their charts they got the most hp out of a Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Each vehicle/engine is different so some gain 8 some gain 12. I would guess if you were just going by Hp before the transmission some add ons would get you there, but to get over the 300 mark at the rear wheels you are going to need a S/Charger or Turbo........
Just my ole .02 cents worth......
I wish the manufacturer hp rating would show at the wheels rating to be more realistic............

Don't worry about the HP #'s they are just for bragging rights. Do things that make you feel good with the truck. I did

Pro-Cold
Taylor TV 50 Wires
NGK tr55iX Plugs
MagnaCharger Radix Intercooled SuperCharger.

In the past I've had a Wester's PCM/Hypertech/Predator, Taylor 8MM wires, KN Fipk, Kenne Bell SC.

If I was starting from Scratch, I would use these to start

Pro-Cold
Taylor TV 50 Wires
NGK tr55iX Plugs

Then If it doesn't feel strong enough bolt on the Radix. It only takes 9hrs if you Put the Aux Fuel Pump on correctly the 1st time. It takes about 6 more before you realize you hooked it up backwards. >:D

I usually figure a 28% driveline loss for the trucks. You can expect a 15-20% loss from a car. I dynoed a stock 5.3 Silverado in '99. I think they were rated at 275hp back then? The truck made 194 rwhp.

I haven't run my Av on a dyno but I'm guessing through my tweaks I'm push 300 HP. The 5.3 Vortec seems to be VERY sensitive to a loss of backpressure and how that impacts torque. For example an owner of an '04 Av now has 295 HP out of the box, a 10 HP gain, but that 10 HP gain came at a price, a 10 pound loss of torque from 340 to 330. For me, however I went with brute force for off-roading and load carrying, I'd rather have the torque than the HP. If I'm hung up in 4-Lo somewhere it's the torque (and some meaty tires) that's going to get me out, not HP. Further to this point the SSR puts gets 300 HP out of the 5.3 Vortec, but it came at an even bigger price producing only 310 pound feet of torque - a 30 pound drop to gain 15 HP over an '02!

With that said if you tweak the exhaust with something conservative so you don't reduce the back pressure too much. The HPP III or Diablo is going to help you tweak up the engine and squeeze out some more juice. Finally changing the intake and going with a K&N will add a few more. I think if you do these three changes TOGETHER you'll achieve your number.

Will you notice any difference? If you don't get a Diablo or HPP III to change the shift points and firmness, you won't notice a thing except your engine makes a really awesome amount of noise when you stand on it. If you spend the money and reprogram the computer, especially the shifting points then you will notice some more under the foot - however it's subjective.

Do I have regrets? Nah! The exhaust sounds so much better than stock and I definitely have a surprising amount of juice off the line for a 6K pound truck. Could have spent my money in better places, Av related or not - sure could.

Good luck on your quest and let us know what you decide!
