Lighted Sail Panel Screws

Thanks a lot Josh, so let me get this streight, you pass all the wires from the screws threw the holes make all your splicing then put everything in place and start turning the screws.

another way to get wires from the pic josh posted to the bottom of the truck: (or actually all the way from underneath the sailpanel)

take the bedcovers off.
remove all four tiedown bolts on that side (15mm),
loosen the screws (torx) that attach the saddlebag hinges to the truck (4 of them),
remove the torx screws holding the rear handle in (3 of them),
remove the 10mm silver bolt under the latch for the saddlebag,
and remove the inner sail panel and the drain cover underneath it.

with this done you can pull the side of the bed up and swing in across the bed.

with the tailgate down you can remove the two screws holding the tailight.
pull the tailight out.

now you can see where the wire can be run all the way down from the sailpanel through the tailight hole to the underside of the truck.

sounds like a lot of work but its really not that bad.

what if you havent used your trailer harness...its in a drawer in the shop....where do you find power then...
Redaval, the trailer harness we are speaking of is the under body (on the frame) harness. Here are some connection pics:

Wow avatar . This sounds like a pro way to run the wires! Got any pics of this method?

I have one question though. What is the best way to route the wires from the tool box to the trailer harness ??? .........
I like what I am hearing from avatar (y) a couple of posts above. Alternately, here is a quick (less professional) method of running the wires down through the side compartments:

Here is a pic of the hazards. It took me a few times to get this pic, everytime I went to take it they would be in the flashing state. LOL
I just put the signal mirrors on not to long ago.

Are you sure it wasn't just that your camera was frozen?! ;) ;D

Looks good Josh!

That's the way I did mine and I'm very pleased with the results. I soldered and heat shrank all conections and used wiring loom so that it was a clean install. I like the fact that I have brake lights and turn sygnals as well as emergency flashers. This is a awsome mod!
Here's some not so great pics.

Sure.....

After I hunt down all four pairs of license plate lights I come across these:

Here's the link:

A bit pricy at 22 bucks a pair, but good lookin - and it looks like they have a 1/4 X 1/2" size that should work - don't know how or if you could snug up the retaining nut.

Jake

Stylin Concepts has these in LED in about 5 colors to choose from

Thought about a diffrent way of doing these!! Reds for brake/park and ambers for turn signals!! Think about it

another way to do the install:

Remove the grab handle torx screws ...
Remove drain cover (by the rear window, next to the sail panel
Remove the 4 Torx screws holding the compartment door to the truck body
Remove the silver bolt holding the bar in place for the compartment door lock
Peel back the rubber above the tail light
Remove the two screws holding the tail light

Now lift the whole piece up from above the rear tail light (should lift right up if you remember to peel back the rubber ....

you should be able to feed the wires from the sail panel under the the panel that holds the lid for the compartment. feed it around the top and back (area closest to the bed panels) of the compartment opening.

for the wires, as you are feeding them around the screw bolts, for the comparment lid, closest to the grab handle, they need to go right along the edge of the compartment top to the front lip of the plastic. This is because the plastic for the grab handle sits flat on the body and would crush the wires ....

Now feed the wire down into the tail light area and down through the whole where the tail light wires go ....

attach with zip ties to existing wires and then connect the wires ....

Reinstall screws and drain cover .... make sure to have the rubber lip that runs along the plastic pulled up or it will not set right ... it is the rubber that is between the back of the comparment top and the bed panels ....

repeat for other side ...

Now all I have left to do is connect the wires to my trailer harness ....

PS ... I tried to fish the wires through the drain hole but it would not work with the flexable black plastic around the wires .....figured they would evenually would get chafed and cause a problem ... my way has them completly hidden from view in the side compartment ....
Good luck to each who does this Mod and thanks to WesTexAv for the idea!

Could one assume their 'dual brightness module' would be an easy way to make these into running lights as well as brake and turn signals? Just prepackaged rather than picking up bits n pieces from Radio Shack and putting them together. For only $6...for those of us slightly less electrically inclined.....hmmmmmm.

this might work!! Hmmmmm red leds for the running and brake and use ambers for just the turn signals plus LOF and our 3rd brake plus the 4 tail light mod!! I want some to rearend me and say they didn't know I was braking or turning!!

Here are some pics from the "BowTie Racing's Truck Modfest" we had last night.
Pete's mods included:
  • Amber DRLs (Shame on you Pete for waiting this long >:D)
  • Full Time DRLs (better method w/ diode)
  • Red LED Sail Panel lights
  • Tailgate Pinswitch for Auto Cargo Light :0:
  • Fuel door rubber thingy repair :p
We had fun!

Here is pic #2
We used nolt (aka avatar)'s instructions initially, but found a little easier way. We did not remove the 4 cargo tie-down torx bolts and did not have to remove the tail light assembly. We were able to move the side compartment enough to run the wires this way.

NICE PHOTOS!
I'll finish mine this weekend with these directions.
btw I installed the ground wire just under the compartment door where the torx screw holds the hinge to the frame, totally hidden. (Used a solderless lug)
Thanks,
RS
