Lighted Sail Panel Screws

I noticed a couple of weeks ago that on both sides my top, and only top, LED wasn't working.  I did some troubleshooting on one side, checking the wiring.  For the side I checked, and I'm pretty sure I wired the other side the same, all of the LED wiring leads were soldered at the same point to a single wire that then ran up to the taillight.  There didn't seem to be any issues with the top LED's wiring to that point so I'm left to assume there's something about the top location that shortens the lives of the LEDs I'm running.

Given that I've had them on the truck for about a dozen years and about a quarter of a million miles I'm not complaining though!   :B:

That last diagram really helped me finish the project today. Overall, it took me about an hour to install the bulbs and run the wire. And about another 30 minutes to do the harness and splice into the tail lights. What i did for my O2 Avy is i spliced into the Blue and Brown cable for turn and brake and black for ground. I know some prefer the harness, but i was lazy and wanted to finish. I will try an post pics.

Here is a shot with my helpers and the running lights. https://gyazo.com/14fc79fc112d0d785a7c1c3512414b24

How do we post videos?

You can try my facebook link here: https://www.facebook.com/michael.c.backes/videos/10211442108749689/

Glad it helped! Man, that looks great too... and I love the gauges you have in the video. I want to do that to mine so bad. Did you install them yourself or did you get the truck like that?

i did a cluster swap. I bought a cluster from an 02 EXT as i had an 02 AVY. I had to get the exact year to fit. But it is sweet. Even gained the trans temp gauge. i had to send in the cluster to get my mileage to match, but that was cheap to do.

Here is what mine looks like now a days.

Two of my sail panel lights on the driver's side have torn away.  It's been a few years since there's been any activity in this thread and LED lighting has come a long way in that time.  That being said, has anybody come up with some better lights and mounting connectors?  Just want to see what's out there before I redo the lights.

Now not just two pulled out but the two that remain on the driver's side don't work. I guess nobody has done this for a while. Time to check the sites and see what's out there these days. Odd that one side is all messed up and one is like the day they were installed.

Give me some time I'm on a recovery mission and internet ain't working well. I'll send you a link Sunday night.

Check out these flush mounted bolts, would the 11mm work?
Also available on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/BRIGHTEST-Light-Bolt-Interior-Motorcycle/dp/B01ADHUSRY/
Thanks. I've been wondering the same thing. I may give it a try to see if it fits. I'd like a bit more output than the current lights provide.

What lights are you using currently? I read through this thread and the Other sail panel light thread and darnit now I've got the itch to do this myself... I think I'm going to try the Ozinium 5mm prewired plus the insert for a flush install..
I'll have to see if I can find the order. I think they were the 5mm you reference here with the insert. My issue is two if the inserts came out and the wires snapped, losing the original clips. I may order one of those 11mm just to see if I could get it to fit. If so, I'll order the rest. I'm going to solder and heat shrink this go around and also try to tie it into the turn signal. I have ties to running and brake lights but would also like to get the flash of the turn signal.

What would be really cool, though I have no idea how to do it, is to make them sequence like Mustang turn signals.

I found this pdf. I don't remember if it's from earlier in this thread or the other thread. This is how I think I'm going to wire it this go around. As far as the lights I used, I can't find the order confirmation or the receipt. They probably were the 5mm you reference.

Frito, I plan to wire similarly less the 3rd wire (330 ohm resistor & diode) because the 2007+ has brake/flash on the same circuit. I found and saved that same diagram, thanks to whoever drew it up.

Frito, I'm considering adding a fuse in the circuit right after the splice in case the wiring ever shorts out.. Also I'm debating on what the proper resistor should be, I think 330 ohm might be too much for the 4 tiny 20ma LED's I'll likely use.. Considering they are relatively cheap I might pick up a couple other resistances to test the brightness output, as I'm hoping the lights can be seen in the day, but still be able distinguish brake from parking lights.

Let me know what you figure out. I'm by no means an electrical specialist and pretty much just followed others' lead on this one. I'll be curious if you manage to set it up to both see it during the day and have different levels of lighting for running vs. brake/signal. I can't see mine during the day, at least not the running lights anyway.

"I did this mod with the AV in the garage... too cold outside today... we barely hit 60 degrees.."

Even though this is 17 yeas old, it made me laugh.. 60 here is a tropical paradise.

are the wire color codes the same on a 2012?
I tapped into the tail lights and turn signals when I installed my "sail lights" (I don't have the wiring diagram from my '04)

Also note, I made most of the lights LEDS, so I had to replace the "flasher" relay so the lights would "blink" correctly.

thank you

quick question, I would like to do the 3/4 led wig wag, which light would be better a 2 wire or 3 wire light.
