Lock Kit For Glovebox Or Center Console

K

Kregs_Z71

GUEST
I just bought a 2003 Z71. Does anyone know of an aftermarket kit that can make the glovebox or center console lockable?

I noticed that the 2002s did have a locking center console, but I think that the design changed for 2003 to the Taho/Suburban design.

I would also like to find a locking mechanism for the center console. I will look for a clip lock that you can drill a hole for and a hook to mount on the lid. I will post with pictures if I find anything.

As for the glove box - it really suprises me that this truck has such a small and useless glove-box. I cannot even fit a carton of cigarettes in there. :cautious: If I can find the locking mechanism for the center console, I will evaluate for the glove box.

Keep in mind....these locks you put ont he consoles are'nt all that heavy duty!!!! If someone REALLY wants to get in it...your stuff is gone. I had a Yukon Stloen and had some stuff locked in there. The truck was gone in 30 seconds. I'm sure it only took 10 to get into the console. FYI

Here is an idea - Superglue the entire lid to the top of the console and then make a bracket to make the rear audio panel a fold-out secret door into the console bin. ?

Locks only keep honest people honest.
The stock lock (on the '02 that is) is probably good enough to prevent the parking lot valet, or the serivice technician from rooting around in the console. That's about it.

I wouldn't think that the side compartments or tailgate is all that much more secure. :6:

After all, how much force does it take to pry open a plastic door?

I got my '02 Z-71 from a dealer in Chicago last week. the console is LOCKED, and the dealer had no key for it. According to him, Chevy says he needs to contact the manufacturer of the Lock Mech., give the number from the lock, and have a key sent. ;) Think it will happen?

Sort of ignorant (on Chevy's part) that it would not use the ignition key. Surely they would. Seems to me that someone swapped your console for some reason. You may want to do a www.carfax.com history search on your vehicle to make sure it was not a flood car or damaged in the past.

I think that your dealer is smoking crack if they cannot get you a key based upon the lock number. Even if it is not a Chevy dealer - they can use their wholesale license and relationships to get this.

My '02 Av has a unique key for the center console. :0: It wouldn't make much sense to use the ignition key if you're interested in keeping a few things away from the valet or nosey grease monkey at jiffy Lube.

Castle Rock is correct except if the dealer is smoking crack he is for certain NOT keeping it in the glove box or center console. It does sound like a swap was made to your box.

I disagree, it just sounds like the original key was lost/misplaced, after the original owner had locked it.

The key for the console is very different from the ignition key, they are not even close. It is half the size, and has "CONSOLE" stamped into the bow.

I do recall reading somewhere that replacement keys are not available from GM/Chevy, the original lock manufacturer must be contacted.

The service manual has this to say on page 0-32:
[box]
Console Key

Keys or the lock cylinder are not available separately. To replace keys or the lock cylinder it will be necessary to replace the console lid assembly.

Bummer. :6:

That happened to me with a new 01 2500 HD only it wasn't locked the keys were lost. My dealer had a local locksmith make new keys. The truck was a dealer trade so I think they just didn't bother to send the keys with the truck.

does anyone know the part number on the center console lock cyl for an 02? I lost my key and had to drill out the lock to get it open. Now I need a new one.

Yes, I really need a lock too. I know it only will only keep out the honnest people, but that is all I am looking for. Keep the little kids out of my CDs or whatever is in my center console if they go looking for candy or whatever...

As I posted in this thread just a few posts up:

Acording to my '02 parts list, there is no listing for the lock or key. There is a listing for the console lid, but there is no part number, just a note that it is not available separately, and can only be had as part of the entire console assembly.

'02 center console part numbers:
  • Graphite: part number 15060447, lists for $321.78
  • Neutral: part number 15071983, lists for $539.76
Even though they have different part numbers, a footnote says that they must be ordered by color (I assume that means that when ordering, you need to state the color as well as the part number.)

That's a pretty pricey way to replace a key or lock cylinder, especially if you have a neutral interior. (Why is neutral 67% more expensive? ???)

Is there a kit to fit an 03 with a locking box? My 01 Silverado had a lock...
If there is, it would have to be an aftermarket kit. The only years that I know of that came with a lock was '02 and earlier, and the console styles are very different starting with '03. I think it would be an amazing feat of modding to get an '02 lock to fit and look good.

try a lock smith.....

maybe they can make something work?

Guess I will post my solution to this "oversight":

I still have NO idea why GM decided customers do not need ANY locking compartment inside these new trucks, but I decided to fix that problem. Took a trip into the basement where I had an extra cabinet lock from an old project. I think it was a 5/8" long tumbler (3/4" might have been a little better) basic 1/4 turn latch.

Took the console lid off and apart to find it would be real easy to have the lock bar just keep the button from being pushed in. So I cut into the plastic and then had to do a little tweaking to get the thing working just right. Then I cut the cam down, bent the cam a little and then cut down part of a screw support to allow the cam to turn. Put it together and now I can lock up my center console almost like those with '02 AVs can do. (But I have an extra key to carry now)

The lock is not the world's strongest - look at that little plastic hook - it would take about 20 lbs to snap that off. But it does keep honnest people out when you need to do that.

So if you want some pictures - here they are:

'02 Av owners also have to carry an extra key. The console key is a smaller key, different than the ignition, which has the word "Console" stamped on the bow.

That also sounds like the 2002 lock. :6:

Offhand, I'd say that what you have is very close to what is stock on the 2002, both in appearance, key, and security.

Very nice work, thanks for sharing it with us. (y)

Holy Cow, is that....Oh my God, is that......

one of those cool Dr. Grip Ink Pens? I love those >:D

Yeah, those pens sure are nice. And it's nice when that is all that is in the console. Well that and CD/DVDs of course... >:D >:D

Guess I should have used this picture - it causes less stress when people THINK they see more than pens in the console.

Nah, that is just some sealed up foam box thing that came with the truck... Nope, don't try to open it...

Wow, you can see the floor of that console! Other than the last time I took it out of the truck, I can't remember the last time I could see the floor of my console! What with MP3 player, manuals, FRS radios, batteries, flashlight (not a maglight!) glass wipes, AC inverter, laptop 12V power adapter, and more, it's a wonder I can even close the lid sometimes!

In this pic, it's only half full. Even though it is a cheesy lock, It does make me feel a little better that I can lock my console when leaving the truck for service or with a valet.

In this pic, you can also (kind-of) see how the '02 lock works. The lid latch engages the small square hole in the lower left corner. To the right of that is a slot: when the lock is turned, the cam swings down out of the lid, and a hook in the cam engages the left side of the slot. Maybe a little stronger than gadget's method, but still not very secure.

Here you can see the lid of the 2002 console cover, with the lock mechanism in the lower right corner. From the outside, the location and appearance of the lock cylinder is very similar to gadget's. You can also see the slot in the lid where the lock's cam swings down and forward. (Up and to the right in this picture, since the lid is upside-down.) Sorry, I don't have a picture with the lock cam extended.

I suppose it would be possible to install a lock in a similar manner, but it would be difficult to cut the slots in the lid and console bucket and make it look good. Gadget's method of keeping it all in the lid so the appearance of the cuts doesn't matter is quite slick. (y)

I still don't understand why they are constantly nickel and diming things to "cheapen" the truck over time. :6:

But thanks to gadget, at least the later year owners now have some hope! (y)
