Locked Out!!!

I've checked the Owners Manual but the answer didn't jump out at me....

My wife and I were traveling to Oregon to get in some fly fishing. We stopped for gas in northern California and I got out to go to the pump. My wife also got out of the AV to stretch her legs. We both closed our doors. All of a sudden the doors locked and our keys were in the vehicle :E: At first, we thought our Basset Hound may have crawled into the front seat and tripped the remote locks but that didn't happen.

Ended up having to call AAA to get us into the vehicle.

Anyone have a quick answer as to why/how this would have happened. We also noticed this happening later when we entered the vehicle, started it up and started to drive off....all of a sudden the doors locked by themselves. It's never happened before!

Appreciate any clues....

Don

I can't answer to why it happened, but the programming instructions for the locks are on page 2-7 of my manual(2002).

I did notice that if I unlock the doors while in Drive, letting the kids out, etc. that they relock when I hit about 15-20 mph. Maybe there's a short in that system?

that is normal ... when you hit about 15 MPH the doors will lock ...

as to why they locked when you closed the doors???? ... do you have the DIC on the dash? ... the readout where you track mileage, oil life, business trip and stuff? .... if so, you may what to check that ... you could have it set to auto lock the doors when closed ....

You can control the lock/unlock functions by scrolling thru the DIC list of commands via the steering wheel controls.

You will find a thread on this if you search for the right thing. I don't know what it is now, but there have been several peopel that have mentioned the truck will once in a GREAT while lock itself. Happened to me one time. Locked me in. I pulled into the garage after washing the car. Opened the door, it closed as I was doing something inside the truck and click it locked on me. I was well away from the door controls, remote and everything. Just locked by itself.

It's been noted on EVERY year of the AV, so don't think a new one will solve it.

Try this: when all is off, tap the lock switch with the dr door open. The chime sounds. Close the door and wait a few seconds...the doors lock!
This may vary between the MY's and/or config's. but my `03 will do it.

Bump the button - go through a hassle.. :E:

And I keep a (non-plastic) spare key in my wallet because of it!

...and our keys were in the vehicle.

When you say in the vehicle, were they in the ignition?

In the "Lockout Prevention", in section 2 of my Owner's Manual (2002) it explains how this should have been prevented.

Another idea... where was your remote key fob(s), at the time? I had a situation once, where my wife and I were travelling somewhere. We both have key fobs. And, since hers was in her purse, it was being pressed and the locks kept cycling everytime she moved her purse (getting in or out, and such). Although, the situation stopped after we had made a couple of stops, and she had shifted things in her purse. I really, didn't realize what had happened until a couple days later. Don't know what made me think of it. But, it just popped into my head.

Hope you find your problem.

I have had this happen as well.

I traced it down to either the Better Half or myself "Bumping" the lock button on the door handle/arm rest getting in or out. If you hit that button once while getting in or out there will be a single "Ping" heard. One can open a door, take out the groceries in the back seat, shut the door and have the AV automatically lock the Doors. This operation is covered in the Manual within the locking the AV section.

You can have that door open for several minutes, but as soon as you shut it, "Click" goes the locks.

I also use this method now to lock the AV when we go to the store now, or I'm at work taking the briefcase out of the backseat. I hit the button once, hear the "Chime Ping" and know the truck will be secure as I walk away.

We both have also kicked on the Butt Warmers by hitting that button when operating the window pulls.

Just have to pay attention to the hand-eye coordination stuff better I guess?

Thanks for all the input guys!!! I knew I could count on this informed group to supply some input.....

My AV's an '04....I'll double check the manual, take a look at the DIC and perhaps a couple of the other suggestions if the answer doesn't pop up.

To answer one question, I generally take the key out of the ignition when stopping for gas and put it on the console (to keep the chimes from chiming). My wife's key/remote was in her purse on the floor. Since this happened, I've taken to putting my keys in my pocket when stopping for gas. I may start using a hide-a-key or putting a spare in my wallet just to play it safe.

Thanks again.......

This is the thread I was thinking of: Doors Locked themselves

I know for a fact that my wife's keys were hanging in the house, she was at work, I was in the garage and not anywhere near my key fob or lock buttons. I think it's a little glitch that just happens once in a while. I never get out without my key so it's not an issue for me, but I don't get it.

Wow . A car thief's best friend :-X.
The keys to your AV, and a full tank of gas.
This is one habit, you should really try to get away from.

I would suggest a quick-snap key ring. It contains two rings with a quick snap between them. Ignition key on one ring and the fob on the other.
When leaving key behind, disconnect ring w/fob and get out. That way you have fob to re-enter should something happen.
This happen to me:
I was at car wash one day. One that I've been going since day one for the AV. Went and used facilities. Came out and AV was just going through dryer. When they went to drive AV, discover doors were locked. They looked at me in horror. (It's was priceless, I wish I had a photo). Anyway, while laughing I just got my fob and open the doors.

:0: yeah but the '02's had the under hood light, and extra cargo panel light ;)
BOTH of these can be modded to an '04 for a combined total of less than $100.00...and the '02 still CAN'T/WON'T HAVE DIC/Steering wheel controls... :cautious:
