I have an 05 Z71 Avy.  Are all 3 of the differentials locking or is it just on the central differential?

You have 3 diffs in your avy??

I would hate to try to turn the steering wheel with a front locker.

I'm thinking more of a selectable locker that can be engaged when in a very sticky situation where you need your front wheels locked to get out.

As far as I know there is no front locker available for the 1/2 tons. Also, I don't think any Avalanche's have center diffs (I guess you could consider that as always locked).

I'm 99% sure someone could put in a locker on the front.

As far as the center diff, it's totally open until you select 4 hi or lo - then it's basically locked.

wouldn't that be the transfer case? I've never heard of it being called a diff before.

Yes, although functionally it is basically acting like a diff that is only sending power one way or totally locked.

Four Wheeler mag built an Avalanche for their Ultimate Adventure a ways back, maybe in 2004 (?) and they did axle swaps with full lockers...anything is possible  (y)

I am curious about a front locker also because I have the G80 in the rear and its not perfect but it does the trick however if I could lock the front too that would be AWESOME!

There is no front locker for the 1/2 tons. Dakotawilk. That and my lack of 4x4 is why I am going to do an SAS swap in the next year or so. I will be swapping in a dana 60 front end with a small lift at first maybe a level and 17" stock HD wheels to keep my current tires. In the rear I will not be swapping to leaf springs but I will be swapping over to a 14 bolt rear end. All in a 8x6.5 bolt pattern of course. And I will get a divorce case under there and remove my center console and get a fold up one instead so that I can have the floor shifter. Following this once I have the money for it, I will be swapping to a 12" front lift, 9" rear, have arb electronic lockers front and rear, hydraulic steering assist from pst, brake upgrades, on 41.5x14.50R20 super swamper irok and a set of 20x10 oe x12 wheels

I have thought about a SAS but there's a lot of work and time in that and I have to be able to not have my pickup for a while and none of those are the case so I guess that will have to wait

I modified my post to say more like electronic lockers and brake upgrades by the way. I am going to actually give it to my buddies dad who owns a mud truck/ custom shop about an two hours north of here and they can knock it out in about two weeks.

I think a selectable locker in the rear in place of the G80 would work wonders. My problem with my G80 is that when you need it and get the wheel spin to initially engage it, it then engages and disengages constantly ruining the experience as the truck jerks and shudders. Now I agree have full locking capabilities front and rear would make any truck that much more competent but locking it selectively when you need to or having a locker that will remain engaged when the conditions call for it would make the Avalanche an extremely capable beast. Much more than it is already.

It's either that or something is wrong with my G80 and it is not as effective as it should be.

No mine does the same thing. While spinning the tires it will engage and disengage. Very annoying stuff when off roading. I want to do electronic lockers or air lockers front and rear when I do the SAS swap  (y)
