This morning I hit my remote to enter the Av, and I notice that my Line Of Fire isn't illuminating. After my short trip, I investigate further and found a problem that others may also have. Where the wire harness exits the end of the LOF the ground wire and the tail light wire insulation had worn away and become brittle to the point that the bare leads were exposed. Since this past winter was brutal in New Jersey and more road salt was used than ever before I thought that this was the main factor to deal with, but as I examined the LOF I noticed that the two double sided tape areas had failed and that the LOF was vibrating rather than being secured to the bumper (View is from above with the tailgate removed).

After replacing the 15 amp fuse in the electrical panel under the hood ( it was the " trailer parking light " fuse - the right, left signal and B/U lights were OK ), I realized that my options were few. The wires are tiny and I could barely see them much less replace them. I thought of a product I had used before and gave it a try.

This stuff is basically the same thing that puts insulated grips on metal pliers. It takes about 10 minutes to air cure, and another hour or so to set up well. I got it here:

After seperating the leads as best as I could, I coated the harness using a plastic swizzle stick ( Dunkin' Donuts coffee stirrer for you non alkis......) making sure all areas got the treatment for about 2" outboard the LOF.

With that taken care of, I gently pried away the remaining tape and re-positioned the LOF up about 3/8" off the bumper bar deck so it wouldn't be hidden by the step plates, then nut and bolted it right, left, and center.
After snugging everything up and waiting an extra hour to insure a good cure, I tried the remote again - and all was well.

I'm sure that these circumstances won't apply to everyone, but every few months or so it can't hurt to give it the wiggle test with your hand to make sure your LOF isn't working itself loose.

yeah i noticed when i put the replacement lof on there, the tape on the old lof was useless.. i'm glad i used the screws for it.. with the new one, i just took the tape off completely, did a little switching with the wires and screwed it back on upside down.. no more blocking by the step plates.. ;D

(of course, now my power tailgate lock has decided to stop working.. :7: )

I noticed that the wiring looked like a weak point when I installed my LOF. I wrapped the wiring from the point it comes out of the LOF to the plug.

I also put mine on with screws initially....only wanted to have to do it one time.

BTW: great job on the post!

I had the same type of problem only mine cought on fire and melted the corner of the clading. I sent mine back and they replaced it free of charge. Of course they said they never heard of anything like that ever happening.

My new one I reinforced and coated it real well. Hope it doesen't happen again, that clading is expenseve.

My line of fire isn't working correctly. I thought it was the wiring (a short perhaps) but I checked it over thoroughly and found a different problem...

The Line of Fire is made up of four shorter LED assemblies (as far as I can tell from inspecting it). The connection after the second LED run is bad and the rest of the Line of Fire (the 3rd and 4th sections) isn't working properly (lights up feebly/dimly).

It's been some time since I ordered and installed it and I'm not sure why this happened since once installed it doesn't experience any wear and tear except for the normal road bounces/bumps.

How do I get in touch with Jason (I think that's his name) to see what if anything he can do to help me replace it? I love the product and would be happy to return the broken one after I get a new one (and would be happy to pay a reduced price - I'm not looking for a freebie).

Thanks to anyone who can steer me in his direction.

Didn't the turn signals work on the wrong side when you installed it upside down? Or am I missing something? Otherwise I will do this when I install mine. Thanks.

that's why i needed to switch the wires around a bit.. on the instructions, (which u can view on jpcustoms.com! thanks jason!) it tells u which wires are for what.. i just snipped each of the turn signal wires and crossed them over.. what was left is now right and vice versa.. and now u can see all the lights over the step plates..

My third one from Altec has gone bad! :E:
I won't be getting another one from them.
I'm looking into the alternative from Toucan Industries.
Hopefully it will last longer.
