Look Out, 8.1's...

"Top End Package- improvements up to 100HP while maintaining excellent drivability and remaining emission compliant. Includes CNC ported cylinder heads, custom camshaft, Cloyes Hex- Adjust timing chain set, chromemoly pushrods, MORE Performance plug wire set, quality gasket set & 160 degree thermostat (All components available separately). Total package price $2895.00"

OK, not too shabby, lots of install $$$ with that - 100 HP will bring you up to the 8.1L without the weight. I am not overly concerned - hit 14.7 tonite ;D

Dang that's quick for one of these things!

Even if one of us does step up to a setup like that... it's almost imperative that you beef up the tranny and possibly even the rear end, correct? :cautious:

You go Gxx.

A small block with a supercharger is still a small block.

With that new sc Cobra coming out it looks like I may have to get a sc for my 'vette. Same thing, if you start small you are always playing catch up. :B:

Thats what i say when i blow those slow vettes away on my measly little 4 cylinder 180 rear wheel hp suzuki hayabusa >:D

weight is everything! ;D ;D

Check with Butch on the 4L60E transmission and differential upgrades if your going to +100 the engine - better to invest now than later.

Basically you need a better stall torque converter, Kevlar clutches, rebuild and a Transgo - the differential I will leave to Butch.

I think an extra ~100hp to the rear diff is asking for trouble, personally.

A four-wheeler rag had a special section about Ford 9" rear ends a few months back. The compared them to the GM 8.5", the Dana 30, and the Dana 44. I think they also tossed in a GM 10.5 in one of the pictures.

The difference between them all is amazing. The Ford is super-stout looking, it's just beefy everywhere. the GM 10.5 is just BIG. The D30 is just PUNY and fragile, the D44 was similar to the 9", just more slender all around (gear teeth, ring gear thickness, pinion size). The GM 8.5 was close to the D44 if I remember right, with the nudge going for the D44 for some odd reason...

I'll try to dig it up.

For toying around, the GM 8.5 might be fine... for drag strip launches and close to 6000lbs, I'd probably look for a custom built rear end... :cautious:

Currie Enterprises Custom Rear Ends.

so, what we are basically saying here, is it would have been better and cheaper if you had bought a 2500 in the first place?

It's all relative. I wouldn't race a motorcycle in my Corvette, just like you would be smart enough not to race a Corvette in your avalanche. (I'm giving you the benifit of the doubt here.)

Apples to Apples.....Oranges to Oranges

That is like someone comming up to me saying, "My brothers sound system in his car is louder than yours!"
I am a DJ running a 12,000 watt sound system. I have to sit back an laugh it off.

As far as 8.1 vs 5.3...it all washes out at the gas tanks!

Depends on what road was made out of!! LOL
Just stirin the pot , all in fun! ;)

;D
gandolphxx and others will be by shortly, Marc! >:D

Marc_w - where to start?

8.1L engine
4L85E transmission
10.5" full floater rear and 9.5" front

Must I go on ...

I don't sweat the Vettes, its the Camaros with roll bars and drivers with helmets that I worry about. >:D

And Lightnings, best not to toy with them.

Just messing with you guys, Gxx. ? ;D

I am quite jealous of the tranny and diff's you guys have...
No problemo, if it wont stand 600 HP, why have it >:D

Besides, when I ran the 14.7 and got cheers, it took three hours to wipe the smile off my face - ain't nobody calling my Beast "butt Ugly" no more. >:D

When comparing Apples to Apples..., there's no way a Small block could ever equal the Horse power, and Torque of a Big Block.., but its true.., Weight does Equal Horse power..., and in the case of the 2500 vs the 1500 is the Equalizer..., but along with that Weight savings comes a much Weaker Drive Train..., as much as ive beefed up the Trans, and 10 Bolt Rear..., I know ill be back in there at some point to keep things in one piece..., and as far as Rear Ends go.... Yep.., the Ford 9 inch is the Strongest of them all.., and is still pretty light weight.., gotta give it to Ford there..., You'll see it in Modified form under any serious Drag, or Stock car.., no matter what chassis, or Power..... Hurts a Chevy Guy to have to say that.., ha,ha......

Butch correct me if I'm wrong...but a supercharged 5.3L with the 4l60E tranny...if never taken to a track to run the 1/4 mile.....will the tranny sustain the whipple with just daily spirited driving and the occasional green light dash?....Your the expert here... :B:

I think You'll be ok NJAV...., as long as You dont Hammer it to oftened.., and stay up on the Maintenance of the Trans, and Rear End.., it all depends on how You drive it...., But.., that Urge will be there..., ha,ha......

Hey Butch, us 5.3 guys want to know
Have you had a chance to take it to the track with the whipple yet or any dyno results???????????????????
ENQUIRING MINDS WANT TO KNOW
ZEEYA

1,000 lbs is still 1,000 lbs. And 1,000 lbs is something else the 2500 has 'going' for it. I will not deny that the 8.1L puts out a lot of power, but that is a LOT of extra weight to pull.

As a Corvette owner...I think anyone CRAZY enough to match speed with a Hayabusa (Japanese Bird of Prey) DESERVES to be embarassed...can you say...LIGHT SPEED???
>:D (y)

Thanks for the feedback Butch...believe me when I tell you I like to do things right the first time.....if you would have said yes to beefing up the tranny I would have said ok also......thanks for the honest opinion.... :B:
