(y) Hey I took my 02 AV in to the dealer abought a loud poping noise in the front end when I back up and turn. When I picked it up they said they had a service bulletin out on that and they replaced the front crossmember. So if you have the same problem I would take it in to get looked at. :0:

Thanks for letting us know. I'll have to bring this up next time I bring it in soon. Hopefully, it will be the same time they replace the tailgate cables. :)

(y) I know I totally forgot to ask about the tailgate cables when I was there but I have to take it back next week because now the steering wheel don?t lock after they worked on it

...just wondering what sound you are hearing....when I pull into a driveway that has a little riser curb and I am turning at the same time I get a metallic creek/croak that sounds like something needs to be lubed???? Is this what you are hearing?

(y) It was more of a POP like if you turn in a tight parking space that is why I thought they would just grease it or somthing not replace the crossmember bolts and all. I talking the one under the trans. They did grease the stop blocks and tighten the upper and lower control arms but I only have 12 thousand miles on my AV

I don't think we have the Steering Wheel Lock in our AV's.

(y) Hey it locked before I took it in to the dealer

I wasn't sure if this was a decontent item from the 02-03 models. I noticed mine never did lock. On occasion, I was tempted to try and turn the wheel to see if it would eventually lock, but it just wasn't worth it for me to find out.

Today while doing some stuff to the Bride's GM product daily driver, the wheel locked as soon as I removed the key. Go figure. :cautious:

(y) I really don?t think is a big deal I just don?t like the idea of something that was working when it went in not working when I get it back. I guess that why I do most of the work on my AV my self because when some one else dose it I get it back with a chip in the paint scratch or something else broken.

Sort of had the same sound with mine. Took her in to the dealer to get the LOF and they found a bolt broken in the cross member. Had to order the bolt...one week.

We are hearing this noise.... the shop sayes it's the steering linkage... they lubed it and we had a slight improvement if any

What is supposed to be wrong with the crossmember?
Recently when maneuvering into a parking space I had a couple loud "POP"s. Forward and backward at full deflection turns. One front tire had rolled through a puddle of antifreeze. So one tire was extremely slick, but I don't know why that would cause a POP.

IIRC, lack of ignition locks came about with the '99 Silverado/Sierra redesign, resulting in some complaints about a defective lock. I doubt any Avalanche has had a lock since these components are common across models.

(y) Hey I don?t know what was wrong with the cross member only that they replaced it and said they had a service bulletin out on it. As far as the lock steering wheel I had no idea that other AV?s came with them not locking mine locked when I got it in Aug of 2001 and my wife?s 1999 Silverado also locks. :0:

I have a 02 and have had problems with the poping in the frontend for over a year. I took it in in Sep 03 they did something to the steering and it was better for a few months. Then it started again. I took it back 3 more times. They kept saying it was in the crossmember and suspension. They greased and cleaned. WORSE EACH TIME, NOT BETTER. Finally I took it back last week (VERY UNHAPPY) told them to fix it this time. They kept it for 9 days. They said that the problem was in steering shaft. They ordered a new one and replaced. It is much much better, BUT it is still doing it when I turn real sharp to the left. It looks like from all the notes that Chevy has a BIG problem!!! I'm about fed up :E:

Mine has been popping as well. Taken it to them 2 times for which they greased and lubed up the crossmember.

Now I will tell them there is a memo out on it.

This is the update that I've posted in many other threads referring to the popping noise in the front end:

About 3 ago I finally said, "This is it! I can't stand this sound any longer!" I took it back again, this time they enlarged the holes on the crossmember between the a-arms. This worked great!
Six months later, well it was back! The popping sound all over again.
I took my AV in again and they ordered 10 shims (p/n:000-015018264 for 5 and p/n:000-015018263 for 5) and this seems for now to quieten the suspension and maybe stopped the poppin sound!!!!

(There apparently is a new or updated TSB on the popping problem.)

BUT MY FINGERS ARE STILL CROSSED!

Troy :B:

Ok I'm glad to see I'm not the only one still having this popping problem even after having the crossmember slotted and the steering shaft replaced.

VB-02,

Did they completely replace your crossmember or just widen the slots? And how is it still holding up? Obviously you don't put half the miles on your AV that most of us do, but I'm curious to know if you are one of the lucky few that are no longer having this problem.

I just got mine out of the shop yesterday. I complained of a clunk in the front end when moving slowly and turning in either direction.

Thanks to this site, I was able to refer to the Service Bulletin for the latest fix, which called for the replacement of the intermediate steering shaft.

I don't even know what that is, but it seemed to be a better idea than slotting the crossmember, which never seems to be effective for long.

Well they slotted the crossmember anyway, and they said if you don't feel the clunk in the steering wheel it's the crossmember. If you do feel it then it's in the steering.

I haven't heard that one before, so I took my truck and I'll just wait to see if the clunk reappears in a couple of months, which I expect.

Hows it going I am also having this poping noise when making tight slow moving turns... Parking.. Ive taken it in twice and theyve just tightened some bolts and said it would be fine but its back... I need to go complain and maybe get something free... lol Another problem that I am having that is really concerning and annoying me is when I am traveling at driving speeds of 25 and up I feel the steering wheel begin to shake and make weird noises... like if it was loose or something.. it shakes and feels as if its not grabbing anything... Has anyone else had this problem?? if you have what did they do to fix it? or does anyone have any idea of what might be going on?? thanks
Adrian

Yeah this seems to be a two part problem for many of us. The loose steering problem should be taken care of by replacing the steering shaft......search around to get the tech. bul. number. The popping when making slow turns and cutting the wheel fully, I don't think there is a permanent fix for that.
