Hello I'm new here today and pretty sure this has come up but couldn't locate the topic. I have a 2008 LTZ 5.3 2wd 170k... runs good but I need more. Have any of you put in an ls vette engine in your Avalanche? If so I'd love all the info on the right Ls to install. Thanks

Look in this section PERFORMANCE: ENGINE

Many older threads about members who added this setup for more torque for towing with great results. I believe the setup has a drive train warranty too since it's not overly severe in it's boost and is designed for stock motors etc.

If you didn't know, your 5.3L is an LS motor :)

There are plenty of options, just depends on how much more you want.

You could drop an LS3 (6.2L) from a Camaro (I'd stay away from the L99 as they have AFM), an LS7 (7.0L) from a Vette ($$$$), or build you a 5.3L motor.

The 5.3L can really be woken up with a cam swap and a good tuning of the computer.

Do you do a lot of towing with your Avalanche? If not, a stall converter can wake it up as well.

Thanks for the reply. Definitely helped

I spoke with a local speed shop and they felt that a 6.0 would be about $8k installed, the supercharged 5.3 would be about$12k
they mentioned that the 6.2 would be incompatible with the computer in the av.

the dealer quoted about $6K for a new 5.3

Was that 6.0L a rebuilt motor? A motor swap should run between $1500-2000 (R&R only, tuning would be additional). Our trucks are actually fairly easy to do motor swaps on.

I think your mechanic shop is gouging you. The supercharger setup probably costs about $7K, and takes about 8-10 hours to put on, so $12K is about $3500 too much.

The 6.2L motor is a Gen IV LS (58x crank reluctor), so as long as your Avalanche is a Gen IV based 5.3L, then the computer is completely compatible. There are basically two versions of the Gen IV 6.2L: with AFM & VVT, without AFM/VVT.

You should find another mechanic....

Yep, a mild cam will make a noticeable difference. A more aggressive cam and a stall converter will make you think your truck lost about a 1000lbs.

Many Thanks Scott, I was hoping this was the case. The 6.0 was a new crate motor with a tune. They claimed the $8K was an install with tune and 'additional parts' that they typically see. I believe the dealership quoted around $5k for just a replacement 5.3, but whats the fun in that! I love the 6.2, I had one in my vette and several in my denalis... I'm not certain which motor I currently have in my 13 av, but will check.
